So when the AST clan closed, I copyrighted there name and now they are  re opening with a name copyrighted by my clan. What should I do?

On March 28. On March 29 I copyrighted Alaska State Troopers GTA IV PC Clan and then they want to take there name back? 2 hours ago they said they would re open soon.

ok, even though it is a GTA IV PC Clan? What if we changed to Alaska Emergency Services? Then could we copyright it? And nobody except the real AST owns that name

Why try to copyright it? Give it a rest and forget about the copyrighting aspect. Modding should be about having fun, especially in the multiplayer aspect because you're together with friends whom share the same interest as you. Choose a clan or group name, stand by it and be unique, and if just so happens somebody wants to put together a clan with the same name or idea as your's, deal with it.

Names are not copyrightable; the relevant IP protection is trademarks, but your chance of getting trademark protection for a clan is essentially nil (you aren't going to be able to show sufficient association with your brand; also, you'd almost certainly have to register it before an ISP would care about a cease-and-desist, and that's both expensive and likely not really possible for a clan).

Also, trademarks can't be purely descriptive, or they receive no protection (the idea is to protect a brand identity, not to make it impossible for people to generically refer to a product; that's why trademarks that become generic lose protection, and why Apple dropped the "App Store" suit against Amazon), so "Alaska Emergency Services" would almost certainly not be trademarkable.
