5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM

Recommended Posts

So I'm finally getting rid of this shitty of this shitty 80GB HDD.

Question is: is 5400 RPM against 7200 RPM really that much of a difference?

It'll be noticeable, I'd go with the 7200 rpm one.

Checked some HDDs, they both have 480MBit/sec while the other one is 5400RPM and the other one 7200RPM so how does that make a difference?

7200 RPM means it'll have a faster response time, and it will be faster when searching for things etc, generally it'll be better. Only con is a bit more heat.

I'm going for the 7200 RPM for now, thanks!

The main reason I went for a 72 over a 54 was the 5 year warranty over 3 year, I replaced a WD Scorpio Blue with a Scorpio Black, there was a slightly noticeable increase in speed when moving large files.

You are using the WRONG right theme!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well it's not SATA or IDE either, it's USB 2.0 facepalm.gif

It's better never to install anything like video games on external drive.

5400 RPM drives have much less noise level and power consumption, and modern models (like WD Caviar Green) are pretty fast in sequential operations, but they have long access time. I use 500GB 7200 as a system drive and 2TB 5400 as a storage.

Actually i have seen a ioDrive Octal of 5.12TB and it is the quietest of the disks I have ever used...!!!

And it is super fast...!!!

http://www.fusionio..../iodrive-octal/

It is also uses 150W of power, has a double wide PCI-e x16 form factor, is meant for servers and has no listed price (I have heard $15,000 per unit, and an 80GB drive is about $3,000). You sure you actually use one of these?
