Linux Distros and Linux Related Discussion

I understand that many people on here do not use a Linux based OS, but I know for a fact that some people here do. My NIC seemed to suddenly stop working for all installations of Windows 7 (don't ask me why) so I've been spending a lot more time using and experimenting with different types of Linux distros.

I currently use Ubuntu 11.10 B2 and I got used to the Unity interface but I would like something a little different. I decided to try using Elive but that was a miserable fail since I either had to pay to install it or I had to write some stupid blog about it. So, basically, I was wondering what you fellow forum members are using, and what you recommend. I have heard that Debian is good, I might mess around with installing that later too. I would prefer distros other than ones meant for older computers with little RAM, such as Damn Small Linux. There's just so many different distros out there that I wanted to get ideas from my fellow forum members rather than going in alphabetical order and testing out every single one....

I also figured anyone wanting to just talk about Linux in general could post here as well.

My server and backup are running Debian and my router DD-WRT, I have also used Ubuntu, Puppy and BackTrack(Ubuntu based, previously Debian), So far I think Debian is the best all rounder.

Looks like there are a few of us.

Well I guess I'll set aside a small 50 GB partition for debian and see how I like it. 50 GB might be a little much but I have 1.96 TB of space to use. Luckily I link my home folder to a partition on my 500GB disk so all of my downloads, documents, etc are synced between most any OS I use (besides Windows).

In reference to the downloads thing. Just wanted to point out that linux has a package that makes linux able to access Windows format drives. Just something to think about for OS file sharing :)

Yeah I used to access my Windows partition all the time via terminal as well as the GUI. I never actually bothered to link my Windows downloads since none of them are meant for Linux  Ubuntu comes with (seemingly) full NTFS support.

Oh and congrats on first post!

I used to be a DJ and did a lot with audio files, so I used to use Ubuntu Studio and liked it a lot. It also had a lot of support for video stuff as well. I have tried the newer versions of Ubuntu and will agree the interface takes some getting used to, especially if you are a regular Linux user. I have Ubuntu installed now. There was another one I liked really well which was Fedora. I am thinking of going back to Fedora here soon. I changed to Ubuntu when I found the studio version. I would try them both out and see which one you like better. Both are good, though they are based on different forms of Linux. Ubuntu is a Debian system, where as Fedora is a Red Hat system. The biggest difference is the package manager. (and few others). At least that would be my $.02

I use Kubuntu, I have used Ubuntu, CentOS 4 & 5 & 6, OpenSolaris, Debian, OpenSUSE, Puppylinux, Sabayon Linux

I personally like Kubuntu & Sabayon Linux(LXDE)

Last night I downloaded the KDE plasma desktop packages, so I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 B2 but with the option of using the KDE environment instead (which I prefer, currently).

---

Never mind. I have no sound control at all when using KDE. Gnome will work fine but KDE is always full blast all the time, no matter what I set my device to. Have had this problem with all distros using KDE, and has been happening for over 2 years.... Something is either wrong with ALSA or some other thing entirely... Next!

I have Arch Linux and was wondering how could I get LSPDFR to run on GTA 5. What would I need to download and run GTA 5 along with LSPDFR?
