GTA IV maxed out with these specs?

Featured Replies

Hey fellow LCPDFR members, I was just wondering if I can run GTA IV maxed out if I buy myself a new processor, my specs WITH the new processor would be:

8GB DDR3 RAM

ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

AMD - Phenom II X6 1100TBE/AM3 3.3GHz 9MB 125W

No you can't. The video card is too weak. I had a hard time with two 4890's, nevermind one "4800 series".

Indeed, you'll get nowhere near maxed out.

Ah alright damn, I'll buy the processor anyway I think.. - my current processor is a AMD Phenom II X4 I think it's around 2.80 GHz, so if I buy the X6 it'll give me a lil' boost.

- Anyway, thanks for the replies guys, this can be closed.

I would get a new GPU, while a new CPU would certainly give you a boost I think you're better off with a brand new GPU even if GTA is more CPU intensive. I'd go with a Nvidia card, because in my experience switching from Nvidia to ATI has caused as significant performance decrease.

in my experience switching from Nvidia to ATI has caused as significant performance decrease.

That's a bit of a generalization, don't you think? (Considering the 6990 and the 580 are essentially on the same level performance wise - give or take a couple fps in some games)

Hmm, .quinn not sure where that information came up but a friend of mine swapped to a 6990 after selling his 580 (I tried to buy it but he was asking way too much) and he was getting 15-20 fps more than on his 580.

Anywho, on topic, go for a new GPU, your CPU is fine, do you know what model of the Phenom II x4 it is? I'm using a Phenom II x4 955 BE and it's fine, though it runs at 3.2 @ stock.

Your best bet to increase performance will be a new GPU as the 4800 series (4850 or 70 or 90?) is outdated by a lot now. I'm running a 5850 1GB card and it performs okay until I turn on shadows lol.

Short story version, GPU over CPU with that build.

Regards.

CPU and GPU's bottleneck each other. You have to either do them in pairs or have a CPU that's prepared for graphics card upgrades ahead of time. As far as AMD bashing goes, the 6990 is the most powerful graphics card in the world. The 590 falls behind (slightly) in benchmarks, and AMD always represents a better value. Now, go below the 6990, and step down to a single GPU card, like the 6970 vs the 580? Yeah, then the 580 wins.

One of the reason AMD has better value is in particular not just pricing overall, but the way the 6950's and 6970's are built. A 6950 is physically the same card, but it has a BIOS that limits how many shader cores it uses and what the clock speed is. You can alter this by flashing the BIOS so it turns into a 6970. So you can buy the cheaper card, and get all the performance if you know what you're doing.

That being said, I'm running an nVidia card. Not because I love nVidia, but because it was the best choice I had at the time when one of my two 4890's died due to a ball bearing failure in the fan.
