Graphics Cards

Yes.

I got the new PC, GTA IV is fine except for the lag.

It seems the problem is the graphics card, except I don't know where to find the core clock and memory clock on my current one.

All I know about my current card, is what is listed in my signature.

Best,

KRI

Well, AFAIK, you can't upgrade a laptop. You'd need to buy a desktop to put that card in.

My bad, I didn't realize that there are also Aspire desktops.

Yeah, sorry. I thought Aspires are only laptops and ultrabooks.

BTW. Have you tried updating your Catalyst (ATI card) drivers? It should help a bit with the performance, and you'll also get Catalyst Control Center, where you can check your clocks, but as I said, the best way is to use benchmarks and tools like this one - http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php (for example, here is a compasion of 7870 and GTX 660 - http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=677&card2=680 - the higher the GFLOPS, Memory Bandwidth, Pixel Fill Rate and Texture Fill Rate, the better).

I haven't updated the drivers, because I'm unsure where to do this.

I've never had to update drivers for a video/graphics card before, so I'm not sure where. :P

So, if I'm looking for a new Graphics Card, I wanna look for high numbers on the following:

- Core Clock

- Memory Clock

- Memory Bandwidth

- Pixel Fill Rate

- and Texture Fill Rate?

Best,

KRI

From purely technical point of view, only those matter:

- Memory Bandwidth
- Pixel Fill Rate
- and Texture Fill Rate
- GFLOPS

But it's wise to also check reviews of the card you want to buy for FPS in games and performance scores in 3DMark and Unigine Heaven.

I've bought items online before, and it took them a fair amount of time to get here.

2 weeks most of the time.

I'm trying to find one before my Easter Break is over, so I can install it and test it.

I'm not sure of my PSU, or how to check it.

Majority of the cards I linked to on memoryexpress.com they had power requirements, above where core clock, memory clock, etc. was specified.

I'm trying to find one that doesn't have power requirements listed above. I assume if the power requirement isn't listed, it'll work with my PC, without having to upgrade the PSU.

Best,

KRI

To check the PSU, you would have to open your PC case. If it's 500W+, it'll be fine.

I don't think it works like that :/ My best bet is they haven't listed the power requirement, is because they don't know it.

Well, I'll have to check my PSU tomorrow, if I can.

I didn't plan on opening up the case before I got a new graphics card.

But, looks like I'll have to. :P

First time for everything

Your Pc has 300 W of power, The power consumption of the 7870 is 175 Watts, and actual measured value is 140 Watts,

so can you run it? Not a chance. You need a new power supply. 450 might be enough. 500 to be safe. You also need to make sure the power supply has two 6-pin pcie power connectors.

Update: for an another $74.99, you can get an  500W Power Supply for M3420 Series

What graphics cards that are good, can eliminate my lag, and that my PC can run, without getting a new Power Supply?

I'm low on budget right now.

It's either a graphics card, or nothing. :P :|

so get an card that runs on 300w, A lot depends on the 12v rail amps. available from your current 300W PSU. In reality you're looking for a Vid card that draws ~100W or less under max load.

So, in other words, I'm looking for a low profile card, with high numbers for:

- Core Clock

- Memory Clock

- Memory Bandwidth

- Pixel Fill Rate

- and Texture Fill Rate?

But under 100 W or less

Best,

To upgrade an newer better card that runs all capabilities, you will be properly be looking at an 6770,

Wattage spec is overstated precisely because most people don't know their 12v amps. PSU watts are near useless for determining PSU capabilities. A good 300W PSU could do 24A on 12v which could easily power those components with a 6770, but a bad 300W PSU could be as low as 10A, which could not.

As for finding out, an amperage chart might be printed on one side of the PSU.
