Graphics Cards

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Per my "GTA IV Running Slowly?" thread, I've been looking up graphics cards, and found some:

Would any of the graphics cards linked to below, get rid of my "lag/ slow to respond" on GTA IV and LCPDFR, on maximum scripts and settings?

1. http://www.walmart.com/ip/MSI-NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-660-Ti-3GB-GDDR5-PCI-Express-3.0-Graphics-Card/22086502

2. http://www.walmart.com/ip/EVGA-GeForce-GT-640-4GB-DDR3-Graphics-Card/22254919

3. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX40951

4. http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX40035

If yes, which one? (Just say which number. :P)

Best,

KRI

Unfortunately, my budget is kinda small since I got the new PC.

With my luck, after I got my new PC, I got laid off from my job....

So, right now my budget is about $200-$300, with an average of $250

The Memory Express site, I linked to this one: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX40035

That one in the link above, is 4GB for $89.99

Would that one work for GTA IV and LCPDFR on full scripts and max. settings?

Main reason I'm looking, is I plan to do GTA IV, LCPDFR Videos and need the lag, mentioned in my other thread, to be eliminated.

Best,

KRI

Good Card, Would that one work for GTA IV and LCPDFR = yea

full max settings?  = no, if you have it to the max with the distance to the max, it will or might lag

I recommended for around $280 is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti with 2GB

http://www.ddcomputer.com.au/prod-LT-GTX660TI-2GD5-proddes_Leadtek_GTX_660_TI_PCI-E_3.0_2GB_192-bit_DDR5_Base:_915_Boost:_980-6008_MHz_2x_DVI_HDMI_DP_Fan.html

Or you might search around and get an 670, Newegg.com is the best and cheapest online store -But they don't post to the UK or Oz

So, a 2GB one would work fine on max. settings?

I need one that won't eat up my budget though.

The one above wouldn't run on max. settings even though it's 4 GB? o.O

Lol

Sorry for the questions, it's 2:17 AM for me.

Wouldn't the 4 GB one be better, because, well, it's 4 GB and not 2?

Again, I need one that won't eat up my budget.

This one would work fine, just not on max. settings?: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX40035

P.S.

Again, sorry for the questions, I'm tired as it's 2:17 AM for me. :P

Memory does not matter!! it's the Memory clock and Core clock

MSI N630GT

Core clock-             810 MHz

Memory clock-       1000 MHz

GTX660 ti

Core clock-             915/980 MHz

Memory clock-        6008 MHz

And that the 660 is bigger and better cooling,  as you look the 660 has bigger specs, It's just not about the size of the memory

Plus the 660 is capacity for SLI 'n630 is not,

Okay

Main thing I want is the Memory Clock and Core/Engine Clock?

Looks like I'm going tech shopping sometime this week!

And remembering, the main things:

- Memory Clock (Higher the number, better it is?)

- Core/Engine Clock (Higher the number, better it is?)

- Not worrying about GBs

Best,

KRI

Edit: Found this one: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX33912 or this one: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX41638

Would I be able to run max. settings on either one of those?

Please don't buy from Walmart Or memory expo, use Newegg they are honest reviews and cheapest prices. Almost every part of my pc is from them.

- Memory Clock (Higher the number, better it is?) - Yes, however this doesn't always apply. Generally, a card with higher number is better, but to be sure, check out benchmarks around the web.

- Core/Engine Clock (Higher the number, better it is?) - ^

Not worrying about GBs - Don't buy anything that has less than 1GB GDDR5

The first card isn't a gaming card - it means it's made for computers in offices and it won't run ANY game AFAIK (maybe except for Minesweeper), but the second one is ok. I don't think you could max it out, but it should work on high settings. Also look for HD 7870 (like this one - http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX39701) - it's more powerful and costs about $20 - $30 on the site you've linked to.

Also, GTX 600 Ti is much more powerful than GTX 660.

Umm thats not really true I'm running GTA IV EFLC with an AMD RADEON 4200 and it plays 1024x768 at meduim textures at around 20 fps so......Oh ya and also AMD Sempron 150 single core 2.00ghz.

I'm averaging 18-23 FPS, and that's the slowness for me.

Even at 23 FPS, it's still running slowly

Well, I have 6870 which is slower then 7870, and I can run GTA on almost all settings on high (shadows on medium, view distance 40) on 1920 x 1080 on about 40 FPS, so I guess 7870 would do just fine. However, GTA is very poorly optimized, and you will need a really powerfull computer to do max out the settings. But with some tweaking, I guess that you would be able to run it smoothly on higher settings than mine while recording.

And Hilith, for me and many other gamers, 30 - 40 FPS on full resolution is minimum to play, and as Knight stated, he would like to record (huge FPS hit) his gameplay on max settings, so that card he posted would be useless anyway.

PS Knight, are you planning to upgrade the computer which specs you've put in your signature?

Edited by Yard1

  • Author

Yes

I'm planning on changing the video card/graphics card on the PC, which specs are listed in my signature

I just need the lag to be eliminated so I can start some LCPDFR videos

I tried recording with FRAPS, as a test, and the FPS went way down, below 15 and sometimes below 10. (Only GTA IV Running and FRAPS)

Bounced around between 9-15 FPS, when FRAPS' recording was active.

Simply put, the FPS "meter" was red.

PM me if you need any more info

Seriously use Newegg to buy this stuff. And they're reviews can probably answer your questions.

As for your FRAPS issue. The FPS is drop is completely normal. Most people can't even run FRAPS. It literally takes the game you're recording and pretty much runs it twice (You play one instance it records another) basically its spitting out raw un-compressed footage of like 1080p like (in your case) 10 times every second. I have a GTX 680 and get around 20 fps when using FRAPS.

Okay, but for normal gameplay no recording, I'd like to get above 18-23 FPS

As that's what it's running at majority of the time, and it's still slow.

As for all the replies. I have gotten great info for research to do some more research on graphics cards.

I researched at least 1-2 weeks before I got my new PC.

Best,

KRI
