That not a good idea. First of all its illegal, and second of all it can be risky, but I shouldn't have to have a second of all since its illegal in the first place.

 

Jailbreaking an iPhone is completely legal (sources 1, 2, 3).  It is only technically illegal to jailbreak an iPad (in the US, at least).  If you don't believe me, do a google search.  I personally can't stand Apple products, so no I don't use any, but I have read up on the latest news.

It is not illegal. You can't unlock new phones to run on different carriers (phones from before January 2013 can still be legally unlocked), but you can legally jailbreak smartphones (not tablets though).

As to legality: You actually do need a stronger reason. This is the sort of case where illegal activity is fuzzy. But jailbreaking a smartphone is perfectly legal in the US, so your argument is false.
