GTA V crashes right before loading plugins

Featured Replies

Sorry for making another "my game crashed" thread, but this one is perplexing me since there doesn't seem to be a reason for it.

This began after I reinstalled my mods folder and all my mods with it. The game crashes while loading, right before it can start loading plugins.

If it helps, I have EUP, SUP, VisualV, and Better Radiance, though I had them installed on my older mods folder and everything worked fine.

However, there are some things I'm a bit suspicious of that might be causing this:

  • I installed UltimateBackup+ and edited the presets to my liking; I renamed some units, replaced the Dirt Bike unit with a motorcycle unit, and removed several units I did not feel I would use. I'm pretty sure I did the formatting correctly. Note that UltimateBackup+ is the only new mod I have installed in the past day or so.
  • I renamed several of my addon car dlcpacks; for example, I renamed one called "lapdcvpi" to "police". I also replaced instances of each old name in the content and setup2 files.
  • I renamed several light and siren values for some cars so they could match the vehicle they were named after; for example, I named one siren "police4". I did not name the files. As far as I know, the names of these values do nothing.
  • When adding my car replacements, I only edited the vehicle files (vehicles.meta, carcols, carvariations) for the vehicles that did not have a dlcpack or their own vehicle files, meaning I only actually changed it for about four cars.

Modding this game is a unique experience that can't be compared to anything else. You'll have what seems to be the most obscure issue ever that will take hours for someone to reply to, if anyone even replies at all, and the solution will either be so simple you'll never get over it or so strange that you'll accidentally learn the fix and never encounter that problem again. But one thing is certain: it's almost always your fault.

So, I did that thing where I renamed my mods folder to _mods (except it was actually before Chris replied; regardless I almost forgot to do it so thank you anyways Chris), and I found the game worked.

After looking through everything, I said "fuck that lol", deleted my mods folder, and reinstalled it, but this time I didn't rename any dlcpacks. I even took a risk and added a completely new addon car, an FPIS that I don't really plan on using, but whatever.

It worked. I'm not sure how, but I'm guessing it was renaming my dlcpacks. So I guess I won't do that.

So, uh, moral of the story: the more disorganized your mods folder, the better.

Final update: I'm an idiot.

So, I had this problem again while installing a dlcpack, and I decided to test things out. I removed that specific dlcpack and loaded the game again. It worked. I wasn't sure what the issue was with that specific dlcpack, so I began looking it up for a lot longer than I did before. All the answers mentioned the addon gameconfig. "Weird," I thought, "I already have that, and the only difference between each version is the number of traffic cars and peds that spawn."

Then I realized something.

You know how I said I reinstalled my mods folder?

I forgot to reinstall gameconfig, because I mistakenly thought I already had it installed. I forgot that, unlike heap adjuster and packfile limit adjuster, gameconfig has to be installed to the mods folder.

So yeah, for anyone else who sees this, that's probably the solution. But still, don't fuck with your mods folder.
