Pretty much the only thing you can do is make some sorts of patterns and see what the result is. For example, if you split the texture up into 16 blocks, and make each block a different color, you can start to see what could go where.

I once went into spark 4, took a screenshot of the existing livery, did some resizing, and then repainted. You still have to fiddle with it a bit tho...
