Yeah no I didn't pull it out of my ass buddy, the officer was with a local department in NJ and had been on the force for 10+ years.
Also the Fords are built cheaply. The Expedition has a very small actual bumper, and the metal looked like it was cast metal. The Explorers have to have the spare tire in them to be able to have their rear crash rating. The Expedition with the extended wheelbase is around $31k, a FPIU is around $28-29k, and the FPI is around 26-27k.
A 4WD Tahoe PPV is around 38k and the SSV is about $39k. At nearly $10k less you can get a full size SUV and there's a reason for that. They're cheap and don't have the durability of other vehicles. When my Dad retired from the force he went to a Ford dealership as a fleet manager. I got to be in Expeditions, Crown Vics, and even Excursions. They were decent vehicles, but even he knew that the Chevys were gonna beat them in terms of quality which is why he was able to win a lot of bids because the Fords were cheaper.
Also the FPIs and FPIUs have been out nearly 5 years now. The Chargers are even worse and are known to go after around a year and a half.
When a PD is looking at a bid for a SUV and they aren't specifically requesting Tahoes the FPIU is probably going to win because they're cheaper.
Also the FPI/FPIU have really light pedals which is horrid.
