I'm not familiar with America's laws and I know European forces have different and maybe safer tactics to achieve something but I have to say that even though the situation escalated quickly because of the public area they handled very well. Media lives on bad events. Whether it's a charity going down or an officer making a mistake (or even if the public thinks they make one because the public always think to know everything while the cops do a great job..) the media is trying to tear it apart. Good events don't really reach the paper that quickly, while the smallest mistakes reach front page. Don't intrepret that the police makes a mistake and shut up when it comes to when you think you know your rights (''I have the right for free speech, blabla'') because of most cases you don't. They studied for it... The free speech shit is something I always hear... Makes me facepalm every single time.
