It doesn't matter if someone is unarmed, unarmed does not mean not dangerous. And yes, officer self-protection holds to the same standards as civillians. You know how hard it is to hit a moving target, especially with a sidearm?

Firing a weapon at a moving target may be challenging, especially if the suspect is charging at the officer with adrenaline.
