I'm sure this used to be optional.  A recent Invision Community update might have changed that though.

It's funny - I checked and it's actually not possible to make it optional again.  The setting just isn't there...

    I had wondered why it was suddenly forced.  What purpose does it hold to force people to have an about me? (This is rhetorical, I know you don't know)
