How can I get started writing my own GTA V scripts?

Featured Replies

I have a few simple mods I'd like to create for my own personal use...but if they turn out good I'd love to upload them too.

How does one get started poking around with the code? Do you simply copy a file from Open IV, open it up in an IDE and have at it? Is there a standard documentation on the variables and whatnot?

i have about a year of programming experience. Mostly Ruby, some JavaScript and also some C.

Thanks, but I'm not neccesarily looking to work with the LSPDFR API, just general modding...though I suppose this is a good entry point, and I would like my mods to work with LSPDFR.

I also just noticed the modding discussion forum, if a mod could move this topic there that would be much appreciated.

You cannot edit game scripts extracted via OpenIV. You should get Visual Studio or any other .NET IDE and download either Rage Plugin Hook or ScriptHookVDotNet, set up their SDKs and start writing code. There is some documentation on the websites of those hooks.

Ok, so I downloaded ScriptVHook and ScriptHookVNet (or something like that...) and wrote my first script in C#. Basically I spawn two groups of peds with muskets who fight eachother and everyone else except the player.

My main question is this:

Where is the "Stack Overflow" of GTA Modding in C#? It seems like you can use multiple languages, and a lot of info I'm finding (like the names of pedestrian groups) seem to be outdated (though most still seem to work though). My Google skills are failing me here...the docs for scripthookdotnet is very barebones.
