Wouldn't it make sense?

Hmm i have had this rolling around in my head for like a month, the comparison of the Ford Crown Victoria and the Mercury Grand Marquis are almost identical, except for the fact it's not ford, but i'm sure Mercury could make it to police spec, could it not? check out the comparison of a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria and a 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis vvv

I've heard Mercury is a company made under Ford.

I guess it could be a cruiser, but it is too luxorious (in my opinion) and will *most likely* not be able to pursue another car very easily.

But so is the Crown Vic, it's also a luxury car, it's the exact same body, in my opinion, if they can make an Impala a police vehicle, they could make this happen, it would be kind of like keeping Crown Vic alive except.

Shit! i shoulda read this: http://answers.yahoo...24080237AAtF3Np,

they dropped Grand Marquis even before they stopped production on the Crown.

i really don't understand, it said once they planned on haulting the production sales for Crown Vic went up by 64%...

Even with the amount of sales they brought in with the CVPI's after the announcement, there has to be a different reason why they would just stop making the iconic most known police intereceptor out there, although even ghost crown vic's aern't ghost crown vic's. other then that, it really makes no sense, especially coming straight from a car manufacturing factory, that can put anything in a vehicle, look at the smart car, the dumbest car ever put on the road...

I wouldn't personally own a smart car, i see people on a daily basis driving on the highway with them, that is my MAIN concern for owning a smart car, in the city, okay, i could handle that, but not on the highway at those speed's, they scare the shit out of me

In response to the original question, there actually were some Grand Marquis police-spec vehicles. The one I can most recently recall seeing with my own eyes was used as highway patrol and/or high-speed pursuit vehicles along I-95 near Philadelphia, PA. (If I'm remembering correctly, it was either Ridley Twp or Ridley Park Twp that had one... This was back around 2004, though.) It was based on the factory-modified 2003 or 2004 Mercury Marauder, which featured a supercharged version of Ford's 4.6L modular V8. (And man! You could really hear that supercharger whine when the driver stomped on it.) The '03-'04 Marauder was to the standard Grand Marquis as the '94-'96 Impala SS was to the standard Caprice, but it wasn't anywhere near as popular as the Impala SS.

As for why the Crown Vic and Marquis were discontinued, I think it had a lot to do with how large they were. They had essentially become the last vestige of full-sized cars. It also could have had a lot to do with Ford's aquisition of various other car manufacturers over the years, such as Volvo, Mazda, and Holden. Such aquisitions alone resulted in a decided shift toward more "European- and Japanese-sized" cars, such as the Focus, the Fusion, the Five-Hundred, and the new Taurus. (Or more notably, the Ford Mondeo, which was never sold in North America.)

Mercury is simply another Ford brand, and the Grand Marquis is the same actual car as the Crown Victoria (as is the Lincoln Town Car)). They are targeted to different market segments, and have somewhat different styling. Ford simply decided to use the Ford-badged variant as the basis for the police car.

Also, RazberyBandit: The Panther platform (Town Car, Crown Vic, Grand Marquis) was in fact considered the last "full-size Ford" platform.

The Panther platform is dead.

Anyways, very few agencies used Grand Marq's as police cars, they were never issued as a police package, except between '79 and '82. And actual police package Grand Marq's, not just kitted up ones, are pretty much the holy grail of Panther platform cars.

Difference between a Crown Vic and a Grand Marq? 1,000 bucks and some badges.

Love the Marauder... a favorite for the local dope boys around here and a bullseye for pulling them over..

It's too late now, the Panther platform was retired, and thus, all cars that use that platform, the Crown Vics, Grand Marquis', Town Cars, etc., are now retired. I don't see why they would make the Grand Marquis into a police vehicle anyway, as it is esentially a Crown Victoria with a different nameplate.

even Crown Vic can't say a drop in sales is enough to stop designing them, every police department has at least between 1 and 10, and that's alot of police department's just between Canada and the US, although, school officer's here, use ford focus lol i also saw an HRP Cobalt LS today as well as a Canyon

it may have been really big and boat like, but i would imagine, there would have been a way to compact the car enough (make it smaller) for police use
