I'd say they're a bit higher than your average Wilson security haha. They carry a gun and as you said, have arresting and charging powers as special constables (but don't usually)

Security fellas can do fuck all and can't even carry a baton, taser or capsicum spray, only a torch and their bare hands.

Sort of. They're obviously trained far better and a bit higher in status and definitely pay but in terms of duties, same sort of thing. The powers of arrest (and use of force) are limited to Commonwealth Land.

Some security, especially those in hospitals and mental health facilities have greater powers in terms of use of force, arrest and detaining etc but either way, wasn't meaning to diminish the work the PSO's do but equate the duties.

Not sure if it's current but in Perth in the late 2000's Wilson had a contract to provide Transperth (state buses) with security and enforcement services. They wore uniforms the same colours and styles as WAPol with "Transit Security" patches that were very similar to WAPol as well.  These guys were armed with batons, OC and handcuffs (mindful OC is legal in WA and they had endorsements for the batons/cuffs) and got around in vehicles that were done up quite official looking with amber lights. They had powers to arrest and use force under some transport legilslation.  Not sure if they're still doing this but I'm sure @Oblong247 could enlighten us. :teehee:

Having a quick look at google I see that Wilson are/were doing a similar thing for taxis. Interesting that WA has essentially farmed out a lot of what was traditionally police work to private security: http://www.news.com.au/national/guards-eye-taxi-thugs/story-e6frfkp9-1226206947775. I'd be interested to know how successful it went and if it's still happening.

PSOs have limited arrest powers and the power to detain person for state crimes w/o being special constables.

PSOs and Wilson wouldn't patrol ADFA or Duntroon, that would be left to MPs. PSO and Parliament security patrol parliament house. Federal govt doesn't use private security for defense bases or important govt property.

Wilson, MSS and Spotless all have defence contracts providing static guarding and mobile patrols to defence facilities and do 'patrol' defence sites in the ACT/surrounds (ADFA, Duntroon, JOC, etc.) but their role is pretty much to report anything to AFP (PSO's and ACT Policing) who will attend and deal with any situations. The private security just provide a 'surge capacity', if you will, putting extra eyes out there and monitoring any situations.

PSO's definitely do patrol both facilities and are stationed at many other defence sites (JOC, Russel, etc.) as they're critical Commonwealth infrastructure.

To my knowledge, MP's don't generally patrol ADFA or Duntroon and they're more of a response and basic investigation force... and I believe after hours they're on call only.

In terms of PSO's detaining, it's very limited and I believe outside of Commonwealth premises it is only for welfare concerns (ie: self harm) but I could be wrong. The AFP Act references a 'Protective Service Offence', which it doesn't define anywhere that I can see at a cursory glance. I would hazard a guess that if they were acting in good faith and holding someone until Police arrived, though, there would be no issue as that's more or less a civilian/citizen arrest... it would only really be if the person tried to flee or force had to be used that there would be any sort of question as to their power.

sorry man you are wrong, in the fire brigade we are often called to ADFA to attend AFA calls, and every single time we are met either by Wilson Security rapid or the PSO's. you also see one or both them parked around ADFA at different times of the day.

@Kyben Yes WA still have those type of security, but we have Transperth Railway Patrol who have the powers, as to what a normal typical WA cop gets trained in at the academy by arresting and detainning people, but also carry around a baton/OC , cuffs and i think a gun as well, don't quote me on the last thing

Begs the question what the MPs do all day.

An MP's role isn't base security, even on the actual secure bases. AFAIK from talking to some ex-MP's and other ADF members, their role is essentially to police the ADF members on base, on deployment, and in a limited capacity (and probably alongside regular cops) in public. So I'd assume their daily duties aren't much different to regular cops, only with a much smaller pool of potential victims/suspects.

PSO or Wilson patrols ADF bases (I've been on a few)- MP doesn't

Unless the terror level rises in that case MP will take over

Looking into it, MPs actually have fuck all power even in relation to 'defence members' and 'defence civilian', they seem to have no power over regular civilians. Looks like ADFIS is pretty much useless as an agency too.

Where's the LAC van skin from? Haven't seen it before.

Don't worry Bulldog Designs is coming with a NSW Police LAC van soon*

*soon is undefined

Saw a marked gd territory today but it had no bonnet/lac code (ie it had a number 710 but nothing else), would it possibly be a region car instead of an lac car?
