Random Computer Shutdowns

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Recently I have been encountering a hardware issue with my PC. I don't know much about the problem however I do have some ideas, but I'd like to hear what the community thinks. Right now my problem is whenever I play GTA V, or play any game while watching a YouTube or Netflix video on my second monitor (two monitor set up) my computer will randomly shut off. I am unsure whether its an issue with cooling (computer doesn't feel hot nor is it blowing out hot air) or if its an issue with power supply. Currently my specs are as follows;

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Six-Core Processor 3.5 GHz

RAM: 8GB DDR3

GPU: EVGA NVIDIA GTX 760 2GB

HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM

PSU: Thermaltake TR2 600W

Currently I only have one fan plus a CPU fan installed in the computer, the side panel also has holes for ventilation.

Any help or support is appreciated, thanks!

I'd download HWmonitor and/or HWInfo just to rule out abnormal temps being the cause here.

Thanks, I'll give that a try and see how it goes.

Edit: Looks like it may be the CPU temp that's triggering the shut down. Not exactly sure how to read the program, but from what I'm seeing the CPU temp is exceeding the MAX without even running GTA V.

No, no, that's perfectly fine.

By max, it means max for this particular session. It's so you can find the highest and the lowest temps that were reached during a certain period of time.

Your whole setup is running at a nice and low temperature. It's certainly not temps that are causing your problems.

Take a look in your event viewer around the time of the shutdown and see what stands out.

While it isn't at max (About 65 Celsius for a 6300 I believe?), that is awfully high for what appears to be idle temps.

You may want to check your tower, fans, GPU, and CPU heatsink for dust followed by disposing of it with compressed air if needed (Just in case you aren't aware, please do not use a vacuum not designed for contact with electronics, this can cause damage).

If dust is not a factor you may need to remove your heatsink, clean the thermal paste off, then reapply the paste and then the heatsink, or buy a new cooler entirely (I would not try this solution until it's confirmed that temperatures are actually causing your shutdowns to avoid wasting money or time).

Keep in mind that while FX CPUs are fairly notorious for inaccurate temp readings (I know mine was), because your motherboard is reporting the same temp (Or higher in this case) for your CPU this does not appear to be a false reading.

If you were able to get a reading of your temps while playing GTA V it may shed some light on the situation, if you are hitting above 65C directly before a shutdown it could be related.

You may also want to consult a forum such as Reddit or something like Tom's Hardware if you haven't already, as you'll likely find more knowledgeable help compared to what I can do.

Wow, yeah I'm gunna say this is most definitely a temperature related situation. I had my iPad recording the stats on my second monitor and at the time of shutdown the CPU was at 85C and the GPU was at 72C.

Wait, that screenshot earlier wasn't showing when under load? Damn, if that's idle then that's pretty hot.

When was the last time it was completely cleaned and had the thermal paste replaced?

Yeah that screenshot earlier was idling. I last cleaned it about a month ago, and I've never replaced the thermal paste. I've had the PC since Christmas 2012.

You may need additional case cooling if you only have 1 case fan. Also if your CPU has a stock cooler attached i suggest you remove that and replace it with a better cooler. the stock coolers tend to be crappy with gaming.

My Intel CPU used to get at around 40C idle and about 60C while gaming, replaced the CPU cooler and it got around 20-25C idle and 30-40C gaming. You could also do the same with the graphics card. Although enough case fans with a good airflow will help massively.

Also i'd replace your thermal-paste, since it hasn't been replaced in 4 years.

Thanks all for the support. Currently I'm considering buying new thermal paste, as well as a new CPU fan and two new case-mounted fans. Currently I'm running a 600W PSU, should I consider upgrading this as well?

For thermal paste, look at Arctic Silver 5, top stuff.

For CPU cooling, look at the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, nice and cheap and very effective, make sure it'll fit in your case though, it's pretty big.

What brand power supply do you currently have?

Yeah, i'd get that out of there asap. Stick to the decent brands such as Corsair or Antec.

Here's a review of another Thermaltake PSU:

Our conclusion is pretty simple: don’t buy this power supply.
