Police Stop or traffic stop ???

Featured Replies

HI everyone there , i would like to check with you about police stop or traffic stop .

I was wondering that does the Police In UK , US or other europe country conduct a police spot check .

Such as conducting ID check . they will stop any suspicious character or people hanging out in group .

They will read the person ID no and radio back to their DOR or COR (despatcher) using their walkie talkie mic . ( despatcher ) to check whether are they are wanted or trace history for crime that they have . and for trafficvehicle stop . is the same thing . they will radio the vehicle no ( number ) to the DOR , COR or dispatcher . and they ( dispatcher ) will then radio back to the officer and tell them whether is a a clean or stolen car

For US , i can see that when they ( the police ) are conducting traffic stop , they will take the ID of the person and check their particulars using the computer on their police computer .

Those who have been to Singapore or HK will know its pretty common sight for police checking ID

Here in the canada it really all depend's, most officer's that have been on the force for 25+ year's (RCMP,Halifax Regional Police) know most people by face so they don't really need to, as for check stop's, the RCMP do them all the time especially on really hot day's (beach purposes) checking for drunk driver's, but they mostly just check your license and if your wearing a seatbelt, then let you go, as for traffic stop's, checking ID is entirely up to the Officer's descretion which in most cases they won't even bother if your polite and respectful.

It depends on a lot of things, most European police forces has some form of Mobile Data Terminal they can use to check persons, vehicles etc.

There as some checks that can't be carried out over the MDT, such as what the prior arrests/convictions are for, your immigration status, what grounds a European/International arrest warrant are, there's more, but it varies from country to country.

It also comes down to the legislation, here in Denmark the cops can stop whoever they like, they are not required to have probable cause as the Yanks call it, you are also required to identify yourself upon request by a police officer, you will be arrested until your identity is known, drivers are also required to have their license on them.

There's no "normal" stop, it depends on the reason for the stop, a stop for a traffic offence is much different that those of a suspected burglar (usually done on cars from eastern Europe), it also comes down to how the persons behave and respond to the officer(s).

Furthermore, Yank coppers seem to rely on FIT's for checking suspected impaired drivers, whereas most, if not all European police forces does so using a field breath analyser, officers trained in FIT's can also carry those out if officers deem the driver to be impaired by other substances than alcohol.

The UK police relies on a evidential breath analyser to provide a accurate reading of the BAC, whereas they are deemed too inaccurate by Danish police to be used here, instead they are required to provide a sample of blood, the sample is taken by a doctor at either the police station, or hospital, depending on who's contracted for the job. This method has also lead to several "double" charges, where habitual drug users are also charged with §54, driving under the impairment of substances other than alcohol as well as the standard §53, driving under the impairment of alcohol, as drugs such as cannabis shows up in blood samples approx. three weeks after the drugs was consumed.

In my country ( singapore ) we the citizen there dont have the right to refuse . if they want to check our ID , we need to Show them our id . is according to the Laws in singapore .

So strict in singapore .

I hate this . but many singaporean think its a good ideas . because by doing spot check or so called ID check will Uncover Person who are wanted or deter any criminal .

As you may not know . i am a police national service Full time . or other word is call conscript .

When we were screening or doing A ID screening/check.

we will use our walkie talkie Mic to read out the person identify number to the Dispatcher or DOR . and they will radio us back to tell us they are clean or wanted . and btw

When we ID check a person . the Following will be saved . is for investigation purpose . its for our investigation officer or so called detective .

Such as when / what time or where the location that the person is Check by us .

example example below

let say Alfred and His friend peter , were walking in the time square new york City at 7.50pm 2/march 2012. and they were check by Us .

So the detail will be send to our investigation officer . AS shown below

alfred and peter both 19 of age , were check by sergeant ahling023 and sergeant john , at time square new york city at time - 7.50pm .2/march 2012 .

So if got any crime that happen at time square new york nearby at that time slot ,

we will call alfred and his peter for an investigation

Here is how a traffic stop goes in the US.

Officer calls out stop to dispatcher over the radio.

EX: Dispatch Robert 151 traffic [or stopping] 648 Young - William - Henry (the license plate) at Market and First (location).

Officer contacts the driver, gives his name, department association, advises the driver they are being audio and video recorded, and requests drivers license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.

The officer then can do a few things, here is what happens normally:

Officer returns to his patrol car, checks that the date on the registration is valid (not expired), checks that the registration is for the correct vehicle (by license plate). Normally a good dispatcher will send the Department of Licensing vehicle registration information to your in car Mobile Data Terminal. From there you can double check that the license plate is correct and not expired.

At that point the officer will run the drivers license through the dispatcher on the radio. The officer can use the MDT however this is slower and requires the officer to take his eyes off the vehicle. The nice part about running the license over the radio is that 1) you can do it at the car if you are not going to be writing a citation, you never need to return to your vehicle if the paperwork checks out, 2) if the subject comes back with warrants or a suspended license, other officers can hear that and start rolling to your location right away.

If the drivers license checks out clear then the officer can either 1) return to the drivers vehicle and hand back his paperwork and clear from the stop or, 2) scan the drivers license and vehicle registration (the DLicense and registration have barcodes on them, the scanner looks exactly the same as the ones they have at grocery stores, you pull the trigger and the red light flashes out of it) into the computer, put in your location, time of stop, request the service request [sR or case number] from the dispatcher, mark the violation(s) and PRINT the citation out from the computer (no more hand written citations!!!! : D ) then hand this to the driver and clear from the stop.

Hope this gives you an idea of how we do things over here, I know that many departments do things differently (it seems like it changes by each county and definitely by state) but the general process is the same.
