Rescue Alley on the German Autobahn (Fatal Accident)

Featured Replies

So.. A Few Days ago a tragic Accident Happened on the A2 in East Germany, where a Fully Loaded Truck crashed in an other Truck at the End of a Traffic Jam.
It is Permitted my Law that you have to Make a Rescue Alley in Case of a Traffic Jam so that EMS, Police, etc. can get to the Accident Site as fast as possible..

But since our Fellow Citizens are dumb as hell and rather look at the accident and make photos instead of helping and making way, A innocent Guy had to Die.

Reports state that the Trucker (57 Y.o.) died after being Crushed in his cabin by the load.. The EMS needed so long that the Emergency Doctor could only declare the Death of the Driver...

Still shocked by this tragic incident, and that here in Germany the Sentence for not making way is only 20 Euros... People will never learn it...

For every one who wants to read it (only german): http://www.focus.de/panorama/welt/keine-rettungsgasse-gebildet-lkw-fahrer-stirbt-weil-die-rettungskraefte-nicht-zu-ihm-durchkommen_id_4865927.html

On other Hand.. what do you think should be done to ensure that Drivers will make way so that EMS can get to the Crash Site asap?

I'm a German Firefighter and EMT. This happenes every f*cking time we have to respond to different highways. Cars are standing on all 3 lanes and no one bothers to clear the lane to let through any emergency vehicle. We had accidents where the FF's of both our engine and rescue (German: Löschgruppenfahrzeug und Rüstwagen) had to walk to the scene, because both trucks were blocked by traffic. It took us about half an hour to clear two lanes and get our heavy equipment through to the scene. As far as I know, one of the people injured in that accident died at the scene.

Luckily our Highway Police accepts complaints from the local FD's, so if someone blocks us, we can get him fined by the cops. That doesnt help in the situation, but maybe those guys will never block Emergency vehicles again.

But to fully enforce laws like this, we need more cops and much higher fines. Most people only seem to care when there is a fine that actually hurts them in their wallet.

Our Fire Department ordered a Fast Rescue Vehicle (German: Vorausrüstwagen), that is much smaller than a regular rescue, because its not based on a truck, but a regular van. It is the first truck that responds to a MVA and can provide some first aid, fire suppression and even extrication until the big trucks arrive. That truck is in service since 2008 and has saved many lives during that time.

Quite a while ago I was talking with my Colleagues from the Volunteer Firefighters about how to solve the Problem.. We Came up with the Idea to get for example the Big BMW R1200ST Touring Motorcycle for Police, EMT and Firefighters and customize them to First Responder Vehicles, since it would be way easier to get a Motorcycle to a Crash Site than a Big Engine...

Yeah, a volunteer red cross department near our FD did that, too. They use a BMW motorcycle (dont know the exact model) to provide some first aid on scene. But as easy as it is to bring a some personnel and a First Aid kit to the scene, the more complicated is it to bring in the heavy equipment. In Germany, the whole system is based on the 'Golden Hour of Shock', so the patient has to be extricated, treated on scene, transported and turned over to hospital personnel within one hour. But this system becomes obsolete, when Fire and Rescue need almost half an hour to arrive on scene.

I like the idea to use motorcycles as First Responders. But when it comes to heavy equipment like Jaws of Life, stabilizing systems or fire suppression gear, the idea becomes infeasable. Sadly.

I have never driven on the A2 but I have driven the A8 many times and it is always backed up with huge staus every 30km or so. The stretch between Munich and Ulm is the worst. I was coming back from a weekend at Bertchesgarden and it took me almost 5 hours to get back to Stuttgart and it only took me about 3 hours to get to Bertchesgarden in the first place.

That's true.. but then we have the problem again on how to do it.. the worst part are always the people who get out ouf their cars in a traffic jam...
And we can't give every FD, Police Station a Heli for their equipment, althought there are already 31? Rescue Helicopters in Germany..Or
