I can't seem to find the old computer support thread, so I guess I'll just post this here. I wanted to ask you guys which proccesor, the i7-5820k or the i7-4790k, you would suggest buying. Right now there is a $20 difference between the two with the i7-5820k being the more expensive one. From what little research I have done, I basically saw that right now the i7-4790k performs better but in the future the i7-5820k will be better? I'm not for sure if this is true or not. Anyways, if it helps, plan on doing some editing as well as playing games on the computer.

Thanks for your help!

Edit: I also won't likely be overclocking.

Go for the 5820k out of the two. There's good reasons:

Higher cache, higher memory support, higher base power output, higher memory bandwidth and then more importantly more cores and more threads. its also newer and therefore will be supported for longer.

You sacrifice the processors clock speed for all of this, but to be perfectly honest there is only so far clock speed can go, hence why we started working on multithreading and concurrency.

So yeah, to summarise I personally would get the 5820k

Hey Luke,

Forgive me as I am still trying to learn more about processors, but my question is will the gaming quality be worse by going with the i7-5820k instead of the i7-4790k or is it basically the same? I understand it's better to go with the newer one and that's most likely what I'll do but I just want to make sure the performance will still be worth the extra money.

Thanks again for the help!

No your gaming quality will not be worse, if anything I would argue it would be better, again because you have the opportunity to run on more threads. More threads = more efficient processing. Efficient processing = better usage of the CPU which ultimately means better performance.

You probably won't notice the difference between the two processors. But I would pick more threads than clock speed any day personally.

I chose the 4790k and that is for one reason and one reason only: money. You could use the money towards something else, like a cooler or cooling or a badarse (yeah, arse) case. So, mostly aesthetics, because you're not doing OC. Water coolers look nice in windowed cases, things like that.

However, if you've got all the money you need, the 5820k would be the better option.
