I had to buy a new computer a few months ago because my last PC broke. It has 8gb of RAM. So did my last PC. If I scavenge the RAM sticks from my last PC and place them in my new machine, would that improve FPS? I'm going to do it anyway, but I was just curious. Does anyone have tips on adding RAM?

 

Now for the real issue:

 

Ever since I've had my new PC, it's been acting strangely. Before, the desktop background would just disappear. This isn't crippling, but it is rather annoying. It hasn't done this in awhile, but I would like to know if anyone has a fix to this in the event that it starts happening again. 

 

Also, I have two monitors. I switched out the second monitor to be the same as my main monitor and since then, whenever I shutdown my PC by going Windows(V.8)> Power [symbol] > Shutdown, and then turn on my PC at some other point during the day, the monitors will not display anything and will act as if the computer is not even on. However, when I do a hard reset (I.E. holding the power button), the monitors will act normally. Does anyone else have this issue? Again, this isn't crippling but it is terribly annoying.

I can help with your RAM question. The RAM from your last PC should work in your new PC, However you need to make sure your motherboard can handle that type of RAM.

 

So for example if your current RAM is 1866MHz DDR3 and your motherboard only supports the 1600MHz range of DDR3 RAM then it won't work. However if you have RAM that is 1866MHz DDr3 and your motherboard supports 1866MHz DDR3 RAM then it will work =) Just check what MHz your RAM is and google your current motherboard to see if it's compatible.

Do not mix and match RAM. However, if the old RAM is the exact same as the new then I see no reason why you couldn't add it in - and yes it will go some way to improve FPS.

 

I'm afraid I can't help with the other issues. For monitors not starting try booting your PC through the MemOK button on your motherboard.

Thanks for the help with the RAM, guys! My last computer was almost the same as the one I have now so it was compatible. Also, it was 6GB, not 8 like I thought. Either way, I now have more RAM in my PC (14GB

Once again, thank you guys sooo much! I can now actually run GTA 4 at a nice 25-30 FPS while recording (I recorded to see how well my computer would be able to handle it ) and even more without! Not that I record, I just like to take pictures. It looks amazing! I can't say thank you enough! Considering I got about 15 frames without recording before, this is a major leap.

If you have the money and your video card is fine then I would look into an SSD (at least 250GB).
