Good Video Recording Software?

Here's a bit of a "getting started" guide I just through together for OBS if you wish to try it.

Set your bitrate in Encoding based on the chart here. Ignore everything in Broadcast Settings since you are not streaming. In Video, set the base resolution to the resolution that you play the game at and resolution downscale to what you want the video's resolution to be. Set the FPS as desired, but 30 is probably best. You shouldn't have to change anything in Audio. Set Hotkeys as desired. You should be able to leave everything in Advanced at default. Ignore Quick Sync Encoder. Set Microphone Noise Gate as desired.

Start the game and tab out. Now in the main screen of OBS, right click in the Sources menu. Click Add then Game Capture*. Enter a desired name for the source. You can try to use hotkey though that's never worked for me. If you select application, choose the game from the list. Click Start Recording and the video will start recording. It will initially be a black screen in the preview until you tab back to the game. You can tab in then out again to make sure it is recording.

If you record with a mic as well, then you can adjust the recording game and mic volume with the respective red bars.

*If for some reason Game Capture is not capturing the game, then you may have to use Window Capture. Same concept - select the window of the game from the list, leave the rest as-is.

  • The majority of free screen capture software have watermarks or record limits of like 30 seconds per clip (and then you have to manually re-capture every 30 seconds). As has been suggested shadowplay

Mirillis Action is amazing, nearly no drop in framerate, can record in any size or any game window, or choose your own window, free trial 30 days. I would buy it if you're doing hard core Youtube as o

I use OBS, it is free, no watermark, no limits, not time trial.

I made a guide on my channel on how to get a good quality:performance balance if your running on a low end PC.

It also can live stream if you ever need to ;)
