Sony Vegas (advice needed)

Featured Replies

Hi, I have just been given an old copy of Sony Vegas Pro 8. I am used to Windows movie maker so this will be really nice to use.

I will prob' have lots of questions about it as I have never used it before or any of the other versions but one thing is giving me trouble.

"New Project" When opening a new project it gives you lots of options ranging from video to audio settings. In the video settings I would like some advice as to what to change from the default, if anything at all.

Obviously width and height I will change to whatever res I recorded footage in. But the main thing I really need advice on is the first option "template" I have no idea what to go with on this one. Can anyone who uses vegas tell me what setting you use in this section and what effect it has,

Any help appreciated thx.

Thx for trying to help but in Vegas they use "template" to cover what type of format, code etc to open and use. Bad use of words imo as template means something else to most people.See screenshot.

The FPS and res size I can work out it's the "PAL, NTSC, HDV, etc etc I'm not sure about.

I think those were just some default configs which can be modified. Didn't use Vegas since a long time and my version (9 Platinum) is in german. I'll check it when I'm at my own PC.

Edit: I don't even have that setting in version 9, I can just chose between PAL and NTSC and set the FPS, resolution and whatever before rendering.

Oh that? I can give you a lecture on that thing lol!

Anyways,I won't waste much of your time.

PAL-Phase Alternating Line (Used in most of the Asia). This one operates on 24-25 FPS (broadcasting for local Television channels, used in most Asian countries).Frame will be 720X576.Pixel Aspect Ratio alloted will 1.07 (mind you, thats for Normal Screen).1.42 for wide screen cinemas, but you won't need it.

NTSC- National Television Standard Committee. This one uses 29.97 (or generally,30) FPS.Used for USA and all Western countries (including yours).0.9 PAR for normal screens (and 1.2 for widescreen). Its .9 because width is smaller than height.

SECAM- Sequential Colouer a memoire *(pardon my french). Its France's own "template",as you call it.But you won't need that unless you want to broadcast something on the local French Television.

Note that PAL frame is composed of 625 lines (interlaced,I'll explain it later) and NTSC of 525.Thats 1 cyc=2Hz which means 1 frame= 2Hz,right? Then,23 frame will be using 50Hz and that IS the limit for PAL countries.Thats why FPS is 25.

For NTSC countries, its 60Hz,so its 30 or whatever. But its compensated in the PPI/DPI/Screen Res.

Its a bit too tecnical for some, but not that hard to understand,I guess? I'm assuming you're getting,as we speak? Oh,and I will explain Interlaced,if you want,as I promised earlier. But for now,if you want to put it on the youtube,go for Progressive scanning,or your video will be screwed up.Hope that helps.
