Shoot-out in Saint Petersburg, Officer and Suspect down

Featured Replies

Usually I never start threads like this, but I was really astonished by learning something like that could happen in my hometown in my country.

At noon, in downtown Saint Petersburg, Russia, one of the most splendid city districts, Road Patrol service pulled over a black Subary for lane changing violation, and chief inspector captain Markov was heading to the vehicle when the driver stepped out with a knife in his hand, which he was trying to hide, and advanced towards the inspector. The captain asked him to stop but the driver suddenly rushed at him and stabbed the captain twice - to the neck and abdomen. The inspector collapsed on the ground. Lately in ER he was asked how did he allow this guy to get that close? His answer was: "I could never imagine that would be possible".

Another inspector stepped up and drew his gun. The rest is caught on tape.

As an aftermath one inspector is in critical condition and another one got stabbed in the face, suspect is killed. He caught four bullets before going down.

So what you guys think? What did those inspectors do wrong? How do you think it show have been handled?

As I said, even that captain was sure nothing wrong would happen. And that's true: usually no one tries to hurt police in Russia. The worst thing are some bruises from a fistfight with an occasional drunkard. Moreover, our police never kills people, they try to shoot legs or arms. And here we have a murder in the city center.

These are the two extremes we live in. In the US, officers would have blasted him down if they suspected he had a knife. In other countries, these type of situations occur. You're criticized for being too aggressive and trigger-happy, or you criticized for not having proper training and preparedness. There is no happy medium.

And both ways someone gets hurt, unfortunately...

Very well said! Considering those options, I'd rather choose a competent by-the-book cop when it comes to situations like this. Note: only after the perp got run over by a citizen's car, they managed to put him down. Otherwise he could have hurt much more people since police were obviously not ready to react.
