Question geared towards New Yorkers.

Featured Replies

So this is a question to all those who are currently living in any one of New York's five boroughs. What police vehicles do you see on a daily basis? Such as Impalas, Crown Victorias, Taurus, ect. If you also have any pictures, of recent police vehicles, you've taken I would also appreciate that too! Thank you.

For marked vehicles in Manhattan I see ford crown vics, Chevrolet impalas, ford e-series, and some ford fusions. The ford e-series are most common near schools because of the school safety unit within the nypd. Otherwise you might see them on patrol. For unmarked vehicles in Manhattan I will usually see Chevrolet impalas, ford crown vics and the nypd taxi even though the nypd has a lot more than that at the precincts. When i go to Brooklyn i will usually see marked ford crown vics and impalas here and there but not as much as Manhattan. I have only seen one  unmarked car in Brooklyn so far and it was an impala. I only have data for Brooklyn and Manhattan though. anyway, i hope this helps.

Thank you so much! This is exactly the kind of response that I needed. My guesses were, by watching countless YouTube videos of New York City, that in the borough of Manhattan they would use mostly Crown Vics and Impalas along with some Ford Fusions as their main patrol vehicles. What sort of surprises me is their heavy use of the Ford vans, you wouldn't expect those to be used on a daily basis with driving around and patrolling.

Might I ask one more question of you? If you had to give an estimate, how many Crown Vics do you see with hubcaps compared to the ones with just steel rims?

Well im in brooklyn and what i see is the Crown Vics , Dodge chargers and Ford Taur as Highway Patrol and as for Local patrol  Ford Fusions 2013, Crown vics 2003 to 2011 i believe , 2011 to 2012 Chevy Impala , Ford F350 as well........ here is come links if you wanna check them out....

I'm not completely in the dark of what the NYPD fleet is made of. I had created this thread with the intentions of finding out, from people who live in any one of New York City's five boroughs, what was the ration between the vehicles that they had in their fleet. For example, I knew they used Impalas and Crown Vics but what I wanted to see was how many of them are used daily between the few.

I know the Ford Tauruses are newly being integrated so I can't imagine many of those around but, again, it will depend on where you live in the city.

Thanks for the response, pal!

Oh jeez, it may actually be easier to tell you what the NYPD DOESN'T use.

As far as precinct patrols go, most of the time you'll be seeing Impalas. Second to that it's a mix of Econoline vans (paddy wagons), Savanna vans, Fusions, Escapes, and Altimas. Then there's the occasional Explorer or Crown Vic. Crown Vics are becoming more and more rare as they age. 2013 Taurus PI's are starting to pop up here and there.

Traffic uses Prius', Volt's, more Econoline and Savannah vans, Impalas of current and previous generation, Escapes, various handmedowns.

Highway Patrol is mostly Chargers, slicktop or with Hi-Risers. If it ain't a Charger, it's a Crown Vic. They have a handful of Tahoes, but I've never seen one in person. They're also starting to get Eco-boosted 2013 PI's, and there are a few PI Utilities coming in as well.

Unmarked... well. Honestly, name a car, they've probably got it. Most of the time it's Impalas or Crown Vics though. I see Fusions and previous generation Tauruses fairly often as well. Of course, there's always the undercover taxis. NYPD taxis needn't be Crown Vics anymore either, they've got undercover taxi Altimas as well, and I'm sure if there's a taxi version of it, there's an NYPD taxi version of it as well. I've heard people say they've seen everything from Grand Marquis to Suburbans to BMW M3's being used by the NYPD.

And that's just four divisions alone. I could go on for hours about the things I've seen, but just going to policecarwebsite or Flickr should answer most of your questions.

I heavily visit policecarwebsite for any information/pictures about the NYPD's fleet. I did not know that they were using Altimas as undercover taxis, well I guess they are good about keeping that undercover lol. I have noticed that they are fading out the Crown Vic but it's not like they are alone. I can't really imagine them using new generation Tauruses and Explorers as precinct vehicles, though. However, they would be perfect for highway patrol! I'm also wondering if the NYPD will upgrade to new Chargers. Would be interesting to see a new 2013 Charger in an NYPD livery with a set of Hi-Risers on it.

Thank you for the response!

For patrol 10/10 of the vehicles have steel rims. But for unmarked vehicles 9/10 of the times you will see hubcaps

Yup, they keep up with their surroundings. The CVPI taxis were identifiable by their black door trim, which regular taxis don't usually sport. That and the fact that they are CVPI's, not the extended wheelbase taxi models used by the NYCT's. Now they're much harder to spot, as they often don't have any visible equipment. Highway Patrol also uses taxis, but those often sport the same interior lighting packages that the rest of the NYPD HWY unmarkeds do - that being a pair of R/B Slimlighters in the rear deck, a R/W Slimlighter up front and maybe a R/W Talon or FS Viper.

Here's a video of an Altima taxi:

After from a recent visit, especially during the Macy's parade, I saw quite the variety. I saw the Taurus and an unmarked one too, along with an unmarked Ford Explorer (newer model). Many unmarked and marked vehicles went back and forth throughout the parade, and the NYPD marching band was awesome.
