Difference between Crown Vics

Featured Replies

Alright my name is Nick to (ha ha ha) Do not by a retired police cruiser. Those old cop cars got retired for a reason, most departments use them tell its not worth fixing them anymore. Around here they use police cars tell its not worth fixing them anymore. (The department I ride with got rid of there 08 crown vic because the transmission was failing they sold it "As is" for $3400."  Also a decent paint job to the point where it doesnt fall off in the rain will cost about $900-$10000

If it has 50,000 miles turn that around to about 100,000. Police cars get beat to shit, thats why most only last to 120,000 miles. If that 08 has 120,000 miles on it turn around and make that 120,000 to 240,000 miles. Do not buy a EX-Police car.

Would you buy a car that was used in a Demolition Derby? Ex-Police cars are basically those cars...

Also if your trying to be a "cop" and thinking driving a crown vic will make you so much closer to being a cop and a department sees you driving that when you go to get hired they will just laugh there ass off at you. Let me give you a list of cars that are more reliable then a crown vic. You don't need a V8, no one should have a V8 in there car as there first car, also 1 speeding ticket your chances of getting hired by a PD just got cut in half.

  1. 2002-2013 chevy malibu
  2. 2004-2008 pontiac grand pr
  3. Honda Accord
  4. Toyota Corolla
  5. Subaru Impreza 2.5i
  6. ford taurus
  7. ford focus

All these cars will be 10x more reliable then a crown vic, I drive a 2003 chevy Malibu and I have 137,000 Miles on it. Yes its not a crown vic but who fucking cares? If your first car you get anything you can afford then buy a car you want later on.

I know your young and you want that car and no matter what people tell you, you will still probably go out there and buy one.

Ever heard of something called MPG. Crown Vics get about 16 combined. Thats if you are very very light on the gas pedal and braking.

Here is the total cost of that car once everything you need is done.

Paint job: About $1,000 (for a decent one and it doesn't fall off when it rains)

New tires or anything like that: About $800-1200 (which it will need something like that people sell cars for a reason and usually when they need to put a big pile of cash into it, they decide to sell)

Gas: Depends on how much you drive but about $50 a tank.

Total amount: $4500

Also like Light said, these cars are on almost 24/7, which is horrible for the car, and all the parts in it. Police department sell cars for a reason, 9 times out of 10 its not worth fixing up anymore...

I really wanted a Nissan Skyline R34 as my first car but it was just too big for me so I went with a Ford KA.

Might also be too expencive!

On a side note, people have too big dreams. Especially for the Europeans, cars are expencive as hell to keep and drive.

As a starter driver you might just start off with something really small like Harper said. Some big ass retired cop car won't do. Heavy as hell, burns gas like hell, (if your country supports this;) Roadtax will be expencive as hell, insurance, expencive as hell, maintenance lots of times plus expencive as hell. Long story short, car will be a hell!

I might start with a Golf I or Golf II. In the future I maybe will go a lil' bigger. =]

Unless you're going to actually give HELPFUL information, don't post. Please, do us all a favor.

Posts like this just make you look like an ass, especially the comment about how driving a CV and being a "cop".

You're missing the point. He's totally right. It is very helpful information for thise who are new to purchasing a ride and expecting the best from the best. As a starter driver you mostly care for looks, size and power but there's a lot more to think of, like I posted above you. He's not being an ass, he's right.

In the Netherlands most cops use Volkswagens, but from my internship I learned how heavily these get abused. I'd never buy it if they don't want it anymore, because even when it crossed its limit they still use it, there for; even worse for the vehicle.

Listen to him, don't criticize. He's trying to help.

Go do a ride a long, see how much they slam on the gas pedal and slam on the brakes. Crown vics are great cars, but you don't want to buy one that was used as a police car.

I did post a lot of helpful information your the one not posting anything. Its true, a lot of people that buy a EX-Police car just want to be that much closer to being a cop. I have learned that being nice and claim when trying to stop someone from making a big mistake doesnt work. I'm not a big ass like I seem like posting that. In fact behind the screen i'm a really nice and helpful person. I just change a little when trying to stop someone from making a mistake.

But if you decide to go forward with buying this car, make sure these things have been done recently.

  1. Engine rebuilt (unless its under 80,000 miles because like I said that on police cars take the miles they have and double it)
  2. Transmission rebuilt (same thing as above)
  3. If your getting horrible MPG, rebuild the Carb.
  4. Also you may want to take it to get a tune up.

Like I said your better off getting something that never use to be a cop car. I'm telling you from experience these cars get beat to shit.

The only place that would be safe to get one is from a small town, where almost nothing goes on.

Also insurance will be a lot higher just because it s a V-8 car. The difference between a v4-v6-v8 in insurance is huge...

Believe me, if I could find a crown vic that wasn't a cop car, I would be, not crazy about the LX models either, the CVPI I own really has nothing going for it, it has no arm rest, the back doors are still the solid interceptors doors than again I bought it cause I wanted something I could work on as a side project when i'm not working so really, spending lots of money on it was the original plan to "restore" it , nothing is cheap about this car, insurance works a little different out here in Canada. I pay:

Insurance is $133.00 per month (that's pretty good considering the car)

I filled up the other day and put $86.66 in her

and plates are the most expensive as they go by weight and size of the car $260.00 every 2 years.

I find that a lot of people tend to say that police cars are idled 24 hours a day. While this can be the case in certain states and countries, it doesn't apply to all police agencies and vehicles. I understand that the RCMP in my area tend to idle their cars at calls and scenes, but otherwise they're parked at the local detachment as the police officer in charge of the vehicle performs regular detachment duties such as paperwork. I also know the statement that the cars are idled when they're parked outside the coffee shop, which again, applies to agencies elsewhere. Personally, every time I've been to a Tim Hortons or other food places where there was a police car and member there, the car wasn't even turned on.

I find that to say the cars were idled 24/7 is an exaggeration. Again, though, it varies. There are a few police cars I've seen that have small amounts of hours, nothing too crucial. Especially RCMP that serve rural areas are good because most of their kilometers are highway driven, so they're not idling at traffic lights every 2 minutes.

Just my 2 cents, RCMP vehicles are never idled for 24 hours a day...

I find most of the RCMP vehicles at the detatchment down from my place sit for weeks on end, the RCMP GMC Savanna rarely EVER moves, I find French RCMP Officers prefer the cruisers with the javelins, the cars equipped with them never move unless a French officer is stationed here, which is almost never.
