It's the 4k that does the trick :p Yes and no. You are right, the end product is ultimately, a raster image at 4096, which makes it look very sharp and crisp in game. However, that only works if the underlying texture at 4096 is actually sharp, so the means of actually getting there is just as important, which is why I said "vectors and a 4096 resolution texture." If I were to make the skin in a raster program at 2048, and then enlarged it to 4096, the sharpening effect would be negated due to the loss of quality. The result would be this (2048 png enlarged to 4096). As you can see...just because it's at 4096, doesn't mean it will be sharp. Vectors allow me to easily create both high and standard resolution textures.
