I have just installed LSPDFR for the first time and my AV software is identifying the LSPDFR.exe containing 'PUA/OpenCandy Gen' adware.

 

I also found this in the LCPDFR mod once scanned.

 

Has anyone else encountered this? Is it a false positive? I have seen others on Reddit mention it, but not widespread enough to be an ongoing known false positive fo rsomethign as widely used as LSPDFR.

 

Any help much appreciated.

Yeah it is a false positive. I know people had this problem back in the days of LCPDFR as well. You'll be fine.

I had suspected as much, just I expected to see lots of similar posts about it, as there were not I thought I should double check.

False positive, this mod wouldn't have been downloaded so many times if it had a so easily detectable adware :)

Having now looked in to this in more detail I can see that this is not really a false postive, as 'OpenCandy GEN' IS adware, allthough low impact, it is present. Why is that in the LSPDFR install files?

I am not just going ahead because lots of others have.

Lots of people download plug ins and apps and unknowingly default add and install 'yahoo toolbar' or 'McAffe antivirus' using adware, it doesnt mean I am willing to do the same.

Therefore I am asking for some confirmation of why it's there.

Now I see it in the EULA, not a false positive.:

"The developer of the software ("Software") you are installing has chosen to use the OpenCandy Network ("We") to provide recommendations of other third party software. All third party software participating in the OpenCandy Network must adhere to strict policies that ensure only compliant software is recommended. In the event an OpenCandy recommendation is shown, the recommendations will only occur once during the installation of the Software.

2. How Our Recommendations Work

As part of the installation process, a temporary file transmits anonymous, non-personally identifiable information about your computer system in order to help us determine what third party software would be appropriate to recommend. If a recommendation is shown and you choose to install such recommended third party software, then the third party software will be downloaded and installed. If a recommendation is not shown, or you choose not to install such recommended third party software, then no third party software will be downloaded or installed."

 

 

No issue with me, but it is there and AV detected it. So if anyone does enquire in future and see this post they will at least know why their AntiVirus blocked it.

This 'issue' has been brought up plenty of times before. If you do not wish to use the ad-enabled installer, you don't have to.

I did say (and you quoted me) "No issue with me" I am merely pointing this out because when I asked on the forum about it, the responses were saying there's no adware, its a false positive.

 

So when someone searches in future it will answer their question, that there is adware in the .exe
