2K vs 4K Skinning Question

Featured Replies

So I've done a number of 2K private skins and so far now they've come out great using the 2K templates that come with some cars.

However, I'd like to start doing them in 4K instead just for the added detail and I'm not sure if cars that come with 2K templates actually support 4K skins or do they need to be retemplated with a 4K template?

If anyone can help clarify that would be great.

TLDR: Can I just scale up a 2K Template to 4K and make skins that will still work and be in 4K?

@Vampyre do I need Zmodeler to make a skin? I'd like to try making one.

No, you just need two things. An image editor like GIMP or Photoshop, and a vehicle that you have the template for, the template is usually included with a lot of car mods and is a PNG/GIF that looks like a vector image.

You can follow this for some tips and tricks. The font bit will be particularly important if you're model after real vehicles and trying to match them exactly.

As for testing it, if you don't know it already you can view the default texture, i.e. slot 1, in OpenIV if you open the car's YFT file and it will be applied to the model. I usually replace that default texture with mine for testing rather than loading up the game each time because its to time consuming for just basic testing. Of course always view your final in game.

If you have any more questions feel free to send me a mail or post another topic in the group, people are very helpful here!

Yup, just upscale.

Keep in mind that cars with big texture files will crash OpenIV a lot when trying to add x10 4K liveries, (at least with my experience adapting my current WIP pack for 20ish cars)
