Priority Tones Aren't Used in California, Right??

Featured Replies

Random blurb. I'm sitting here eating lunch with my wife outside her work. Had some vehicles pass by Code 3. One made me look over and kinda squint though.

Had an ambulance roll thru an intersection full priority tone. Like a good 10 seconds he laid on that tone. He was running wail up to the intersection.

I always thought priority wasn't an "officially recognized" tone in CA. He hit yelp after he cleared the intersection. Kinda odd. Have the laws been updated concerning this? My wife commented saying she's been hearing them running priority tones before around here. We had a local police roll through code 3 that made liberal use of his airhorn cycling between wail and yelp to clear the same intersection not 2 minutes before that.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it is illegal in California.  It's a ridiculous law, I am pretty sure more useful laws can be made in California.

Of course more useful laws can be made.

But its California.  :P

Seems that these EMS drivers just dgaf and are using priority tones.  And I mean really, who's gonna question them?

Why would they put a tone on a vehicle designed for Cali when they cannot use them? :-p

Since a majority of the siren systems have some sort of priority on them, it's not like they're going to have the manufacturer remove just one tone. On some of the newer models you can program them so you're able to get a different tone.

Having a "California Special" siren would probably cost money since the manufacturer would have to go out of their way to make a separate unit that would only be sold in one state. Its kinda like the "steady red" light rule California has. (Not sure if its still in effect) At least one forward facing light on an emergency vehicle needs to be a steady burning red light. Some cars made their spotlight the steady burner. I recall the forward most bulb in the CHP vectors used to be a non rotating steady red burner.

CHP siren doesn't have one. Its another one of silly laws California that has with 0 explanation as to why they are a thing
