Ingleburn Siege

Featured Replies

Two men are dead, including the gunman, after a siege unfolded yesterday afternoon in the Industrial Sydney suburb of Ingleburn. Police say that the gunman opened fire killing one man and injuring two others, before taking several people hostage inside the building and then ending an hours long stand off with police by shooting himself. The shooting is believed to have started after a dispute about a sign between the two men broke out into an argument. According to media on scene, the gunman was armed with an automatic rifle which prompted a heavy response from tactical police units.

Wait... Doesn't Australia have the strictest gun laws in the World? I thought people couldn't bring guns into gun free zones... *notice the sarcasm.

Oh wait, maybe that explains why they have the lowest rate of death by firearm. And that's not a sarcasm. Risk 0 doesn't exist, but it surely helps. Australia had a ratio of 0.93 death by firearm for 100,000 people in 2013. USA had a ratio of 10.54 deaths by firearm for 100,000 people in 2014. Numbers don't lie

Not the strictest by far, but we do have pretty intense laws regarding the use and ownership of firearms after the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre, which is why our firearm related death statistics are so low. Even then the vast majority of our shootings are biker-gang related. We don't have people running around shooting up schools and whatnot with assault rifles just for the hell of it.

The mindset here is completely different to that of the states. We don't need guns to feel safe, and they're very hard to obtain legally. You can't just walk into a gun-show and walk out with a shiny AR-15 with no background checks whatsoever (why this is still legal in some states I don't have a fucking clue).
