Certain car models come up as numbers and letters in game.

Featured Replies

So I've been having this problem for some time now. Basically when I run a vehicle using police radio I get mixed numbers and letters instead of the vehicle model (see attached images). I have no idea whats causing this, everything is up to date, I do use a Mod folder and the only custom cars I have installed are the police vehicles.

could anyone point out what might be causing this?

hmmm could it possibly be a permissions issue or something to do with UAC? its pulling the correct info for the car so the connection is being made, something is just funky about it. make sure the files properties are not blocked once they are in the GTA root directory, its a starting point.

So I should change the GTA V installation folder's properties to the pic you attached above? could this be caused by Open Iv's mod folder because if I use police radio without using the mod folder I get all the correct vehicle names pop up. Thanks

I had this issue pretty recently, I narrowed it down to my x64e.rpf file, which I rebuilt and that resolved it.

Just tested it out and it didn't work sadly.... Thanks though, I have no clue whats causing it and its driving me insane, I've never had it happen before.

I see you use a mods folder - so you could temporarily rename it to run with no .RPF mods and see if it happens without any car mods.

BTW when I say I rebuilt my x64e.rpf, I don't mean with OpenIV, I mean I completely scrapped it and rebuilt it from a fresh copy.

Edit: Clarification

It won't let me launch the game without Open Iv! I get a "Game Data corrupt, please reboot, reinstall or go to some website," is there something I'm doing wrong?

You can still use OpenIV (the .asi loaders and whatnot), just rename your mods folder temporarily to mods.temp or something similar. If you get a game corrupt message doing that, it means you might need to run a file verification on your main game files.

Ok that worked and as I suspected Open Iv is the culprit because all the car names now show up normally. so what now? I know that open Iv uses the cars from the mod folder do I need to add another file of some sort like x64e that has cars in it? since I know Rockstar has multiple files that house the cars in them rather than just one like in GTA IV. Regarding your clarification do you want me to delete the x64e file in the mods folder and copy a new one?

That proves it's an .RPF mod. Without knowing what you have in your mods folder, it's hard to say what to do next. I would say it has to be a car mod though, as that's what it was for me. To further troubleshoot, you can rename mods folder back to mods so it works again, then inside the mods folder, create a temp folder. Move your .rpf files one by one from \mods to mods\temp (start with x64e.rpf), checking the game after each one. If you have \mods\update\x64\dlcpacks mimic the file structure to \mods\temp and move each dlcpack folder one by one until you narrow down exactly which mod is causing it.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Dang that's going to take quite a bit. could I just delete the whole folder and start from scratch? As in copy the folders and files to the mods folder as if it were a clean install if I could call it that?

Yeah, you could do that, but I would try just moving x64e.rpf out of the mods folder first, load your game, and if that's the culprit, you only need to copy a fresh x64e.rpf from your main GTA5 folder to the mods folder and overwrite the 'bad' one. You'll have to reinstall every mod that lived in that file though. You could also start from scratch. I guess it depends how many mods you have installed in your \mods folder. I know starting from scratch for me would be extremely tedious.

GTA5 is a very volatile game when it comes to mods, especially after the latest update, in my experience. That's why I keep backups and check the game after every single mod I install. I don't install mods in bulk anymore.

Sweet, glad I could help since I literally just ran into this a few days ago -- now just install your police cars back, one by one into the fresh x64e.rpf, I like to load a save with a nearby vehicle and just check the plate as Franklin or whoever (you can use PoliceRadio before going on duty) and make sure it doesn't go tits up.

@Albo1125 told me that it might be related to the 'rebuild' function in OpenIV, so I recommend you never use that, even if the mod readme says to do so.

Gotcha! I've reinstalled the car mods and everything seems to be working perfectly. Thanks again man!
