Upgrading

Featured Replies

I'm planing to upgrade some parts on my computer and I'm setting a budget of around $800-1,000 AUD

Current specs:
 Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.150928-1507)
 Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: ASUSTeK Computer INC. System Model: V-P8H67E
BIOS: BIOS Date: 02/05/10 19:13:52 Ver: 08.00.10
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
---------------------------------------
GPU
Chip type: GeForce GT 730
Brand: Gigabit (don't laugh, it was the only one I could get at the time)
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
S=Display Memory: 4048 MB
Dedicated Memory: 2000 MB
Shared Memory: 2047 MB

--------------------
Other

1tb HDD
500W PSU
------------------------------

I would like to replace the GPU, CPU, and mabye the RAM.  What options do I have part wise, I'm limited a little bit because computers parts a expensive in AU.
I was thinking about getting a GTX 950 (not sure what brand yet) and a 5th gen i7 CPU, are these good choice's?

Do not worry about upgrading the CPU. At the moment, that CPU is still very nice, and though old, it performs well. Focus primarily on the GPU, because you very much lack there. I'm not sure what PSU you have, so I'm going to give you one that is rated highly. Before you buy anything, make sure your case fits it (especially the GPU).

For the PSU (AUD$157): http://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438017&cm_re=evga_g2-_-17-438-017-_-Product
Your choice of any of these GPUs (AUD$600): http://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=390x&N=50001314%2050001312%2050001561&isNodeId=1

I know that is already at about your budget, but you will not regret buying these products. The PSU will last you for several computers, and has a 10 year warranty in-case anything goes wrong. The GPU is a fantastic bang for the buck card. Again, make sure that the components fit in your case (PSU definitely should, but a long GPU may interfere with your case's hard-drive bays if they are located up front).

If you're willing to go further, you can pick up another set of RAM/new set. Try to make sure, that if you get another set to go in the build with your current set, that it is the same speed as your current set. If it is not, conflicts may occur, though usually both RAM sets just run at a slower speed than advertised.

You can also aim for an SSD to go along with the PSU and GPU. Though it's more of a nice thing to have than an essential. Crucial, Samsung, and OCZ are the best, but SanDisk and Mushkin are all right as well.

Had to re-phrase something.

Don't waste your money on a 950, or a new CPU. Spend money on a 960 or 970. Your RAM is fine. You can add more if you want, I guess.

I'm not sure how reliable or good those are, but you can keep it if you want. You'll have to lower to a GTX 970 like unr3al said, though. Just make sure the PSU has an 8-pin VGA connector and either another 8-pin or a 6-pin VGA connector if you plan to use the 970.

Yeah I don't think I can get either of these because it has these

4 Molex

4 X SAT

1 pci express

Mind the dust, I'm going to give it a clean in a few days
