Move installation?

Featured Replies

Is there a way to move my installation of GTA V without re-installing? I installed it on my SSD but when I was doing the installation I selected the SSD and instead of making a folder for GTA V, it just installed everything in the root folder of my SSD, making a mess. I tried making a folder and putting everything in there but then when I launch GTA V it just starts downloading the game again.

Thanks.

What I normally do is use a directory junction to move my files/games around without breaking everything.  You can't use normal shortcuts because they simply won't work most of the time.  The typical format in command prompt is:

mklink /J Link Target

where Link and Target refer to the link location and the physical data location, respectively.  This allows you to move all of your data and then the game (and OS) acts just like nothing happened.

I've heard Steam can sometimes support moving installed games around but have only ever found a way to change locations before installation.

Woops, gave you the code for Symbolic instead

If you don't want to do it the way Iconography said, you can do it like this:

  1. BACK UP YOUR GTA V FOLDER! Just in case.
  2. Exit Steam and copy the GTA V directory and paste it where you want the install to be. For me that would be my SSD so I'd move my "Grand Theft Auto V" folder from C: > Program Files (x86) > Steam > SteamApps > Common to my SSD (which is F Drive) F: > Steam > SteamApps > Common. If it's just making a mess on your SSD you should create the Steam, SteamApps, and Common folders manually.
  3. Go back to where GTA V is installed and to the SteamApps folder, and find and copy appmanifest_271590.acf. Now copy that over to your new SteamApps folder you just created.
  4. Open up Steam and hit "Delete Local Content" on GTA V. Wait for it to uninstall and then click install but select your new Steam folder you created on your SSD, Steam will detect the GTA V files are already there and skip the download.
  5. Enjoy GTA V!

Thanks for the directions and all but it's not Steam..it's the disc version.
