Advice needed on custom gaming build

Recommended Posts

Hello to you all,

Recently, I've been looking into buying a new desktop PC, capable of running most games on high settings. One thing I learned from experienced IT guys on this forum is, when it comes to buying a gaming pc, always purchase a custom build. However, since I'm no expert on building a custom pc, I need some advice.

The custom build I'm particulary interested in, is the following:

Housing: Corsair 300R
voeding: Corsair CX 600 v2 Watt
Motherboard : Asrock Z87 Pro3
Processor : INTEL CORE i5 4670K (3.4 GHZ, unlocked multiplier)
CPU cooler : CoolerMaster Hyper TX3 EVO
Memory : 8GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
GPU: Nvidia GTX 760 2GB Dual fan edition
SSD: 120Gb Samsung 840
HDD: 1TB SATA3 7200rpm
ODD: 24x DVD-Rw station
Network : Gigabit ethernet rj 45

This build would cost me 949 euros or 1305 dollars and is the right budget I'd like to spend. If anyone with some experience in the field of hardware could give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

It's a decent build, in my opinion, you woulnd't need the SSD unless your motherboard allows for you to cache your HDD and SDD into one. Essentially, you will have to select one of those two to be your main drive (the one the Operating System goes on) what that means is when you install things, it will default to this drive, Now, for you to get the boosting startup speed, you need to have an SSD. That also means, it would be your main drive and you would have to manually move things over to the other HDD. It could be a hassle. Also, SSDs have a limited amout of writes, (it is a lot, you wont use in up in a year or two) but eventually they becaome "read only", I recently put together a $2000 build and i left the SSd out completely.  I feel that in the near future SSds will become MUCH cheaper, and also much larger. So that all looks pretty good, if I were you I'd just leave the SSD out and wait a few until they are bigger and cheaper. Just my two cents.

Don't get that PSU, everyone seems to have problems with it, including myself. I had to send back 3 of the same PSU within a year, and the third one actually fried two of my hard drives and my GPU when it died.

Go for the enthusiast series (TX600) instead of the builder (CX600), much better quality and much quieter during operation too.

Thanks to you both for the advice. I'll leave the SDD out and perhaps look for another PSU. Do you think this build would allow me to run most games on high settings? I'd like to keep playing lcpdfr as well with a nice enb if possible.

I'm not sure with most games on High, I'd say for sure medium. Like Tom said the TX would be a better option. With the $ you save from the SSD I'd buy another 4 gbs of ram. GTA 4 is a ram hog. You should be set if you do that.

Thanks again for the advice. Based on your remarks, I've composed this build:

PSU: Corsair RM (650 watt, atx, sli ready, modular)

Motherboard: Asrock Z87 Extreme3

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K (4c, 4t, 3.4 ghz, 6 mb, 84 watt, boxed)

Cooling: CoolerMaster Hyper TX3 EVO (s775, sAM2, s1366, sAM3, s1156, s1155, sFM1)

Memory: Kingston HyperX (16384 mb, 1600 mhz, CL10, 1.65 v, non-ecc, unbuffered, kit of 2)

GPU: GeForce GTX 760 OC (1085 mhz, 2048 mb, DDR5, 6008 mhz, 256 bit, 11, fan)

HDD: Seagate Barracuda (1000 gb, sata/600, 7200 rpm, 64 mb, 3.5")

This would only cost a bit more than the build in the original post. The only thing different in this build is no SDD, 16GB of RAM instead of 8GB and a different PSU.

Excellent.   Thanks again for your advice!

Looks like it should work. The extra ram is future proofing your computer, Tom is right about GTA limiting out with the RAM it uses, but on my old rig I was using a 660 ti with 4gb of Ram and it would not budge past like medium. I upgraded to 8 gb and it got smoother, but when i but Graphics mods in an such it started to chug. Ultimately it was probably my video RAM that was getting used, That build looks solid. You should have no problem running any modern games. Enjoy!

You really don't need more than 6gb for anything unless you're doing video editing or graphics as that usually takes up a lot of RAM. Heck, you could get by with 4. 8 is more than enough.
