That's because the ELS script refreshes the textures according to the light's frequency. That's the reason why your car was "repaired" immediately. 

If you watch closely, you can sometimes see that the car at first is damaged for a split second but then gets "repaired" due to the texture refreshment.

Something similar happened to me. I wasn't using ELS, so I flew and got stuck between the barriers, and died. True story  :(

It was bad driving skills, but me having ELS on repaired my car immediately 

 

You can use the in-game trainer to fix the car, and by having the car smashed up is more realistic
