GTA IV - FPS drops and game freezes "Bungee Cord" effect

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am running LCPDFR, Braveheart and have 10+ modded vehicles in my game.

This has been happening to me a lot more frequently and I don't understand why. Sometimes when I am in game, my FPS drops to about 16, after that happens I either...

1. Get kicked from the server due to "My computer running to slowly"

2. OR my game freezes and my car does a "Bungee Cord" effect.

When this "Bungee Cord" effect happens, I stay in game and don't disconnect. The car I'm in is just moving slightly forward and backwards. But to other players, the car is going crazy. The only way I can stop this is to try to alt-tab out of game and force quit the game. What can be causing this?

These are my PC specs...

Do you think I should turn shadows off? These settings were chosen be NVIDIA Optimus. I just clicked Optimize and this is what they gave me. Since I'm running mods and modded vehicles, should I tweak anything?

You can lower the settings of the game, but your DC problems are most likely caused by the modded vehicles used in MP which isn't recommended.

Could you post a screenshot of your GTA IV directory?

I just have the normal scripts:

Emergency Lighting System V6 or 7
Dispatch Assistance System

>Braveheart's Policing script

>VDH Police Helper

Plus our mod team in the group I'm in has created around 8ish vehicles for us to use, all under 5mb. Other people are running the pack fine. With that being said, I don't know what my problem is. My computer can run this game on medium but I don't know if setting the graphics down to low would fix it? Or turning off the shadows? Do shadows cause FPS drop?

If you are using vDH PoliceHelper I recommend you to open your vDH ini file and edit the following lines to disable world events:

[ EVENTS ]

TrafficEventsTimeout = 90
// Set timeout for creating traffic events (speeders will be created 2x more often).
// Set it to 0 to turn off traffic events.

WorldEventsTimeout = 210
// Set timeout for creating world events. Set it to 0 to turn off world events.

EnableOtherEvents = True
// Enable casual events like tourists asking for directions etc.

Also, disabling shadows will help with the FPS as shadows are quite resource heavy most of the time.

Second also, make sure you are running the game as administrator. Running the game as administrator: Go to the GTA IV folder, right click on GTAIV.exe, Properties, Compatibility and select 'Run this program as administrator', do the same exact thing to the LaunchGTAIV.exe.

Third: Consider using this commandline instead:

-novblank -norestrictions -percentvidmem 100 -novsync -frameLimit 0 -nomemrestrict

Forth: Using ELS and ELS enabled cars in MP isn't recommended at all, it will cause crashes most of the time no matter how low poly they are. That's how ELS is sadly.

Fifth: It could just be your internet being slow, in MP that is.

Is there a way to make it so that ELS does not show up on other players cars in MP and just yours? Thanks for your help!

I'm running ELS v7. It should be rather stable though correct?

Do you recommend I turn off / lower any other settings? I'm not a big "I need the game to look pretty" guy, I just want to run it, not crash and have fun.

Also what do these following command lines mean?

-novblank -novsync -frameLimit 0

In Singleplayer it is more stable. ELS isn't very stable IMO.

Yes, you can lower really any setting and see a FPS increase.

-novblank will disable vblank

-novsync will disable vsync

-frameLimit 0 will set the framelimit to zero.

-frameLimit 0 will set the framelimit to zero.

Setting the frame limit to 0? Isn't that bad?

Also I've heard that Vsync helps but I will definitely try turning it off!

Ah sorry, setting it to 0 is essentially to disable the frame limit (i.e making it unlimited). You can try to set it to 35-60, or even more if you want to.

VSync helps against screentearing, but if you don't have it you do not need it imo.
