BART Police Officer Killed by another Officer

Featured Replies

A BART Police officer died after being shot by another officer while performing a probation search at a residence in Dublin Tuesday afternoon, according to BART officials.

The officer was the first to be killed while in the line of duty in the BART Police Department's history.

The shooting occurred at around 1:03 p.m. at an apartment complex on Dougherty Road and Park Sierra in Dublin, according to a statement from BART police.

He was taken Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley where he succumbed to his injuries, according to a statement from BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey and BART General Manager Grace Crunican.

"BART has been informed that one of our officers has died from wounds sustained during a shooting earlier today," said the statement. "The entire BART organization is deeply saddened by this tragic event and we ask the public to keep the officer's family in its thoughts and prayers."

Investigators have learned at that another BART police officer was responsible for the shooting, according to an official from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department.

We'll and also when there is another officer in front of you you are supposed to point your weapon towards the ground, it is still a tragic story and my heart goes out to that family

Under no circumstances should that officer weapon went off. His finger should not have even been anywhere near the trigger when doing that search. I feel very bad because that officer died for no reason and now he may Rest in Peace.

Great... First lets make it clear this is just as tragic for the officer that accidentally shot the other officer. Second off guns go off all the time, like 10 years ago a officer was walking up to a car for a traffic stop his gun which was on safety some how misfired shooting the officer in the leg. The bullet got carried up his Femoral artery and he died with in 20 minutes. Accidents happen, I don't know who you think you are but you really should be saying "Under no circumstances should that officer weapon went off" Because you don't know what happened and obviously haven't been around guns much. I once had a rifle that as soon as you took it off of safety the damn thing would fire. Maybe you just think that when they we're searching the house the officer went into a room with out the other officer knowing and he turns the corner and the first thing he see's is a gun in face? What would you do just sit there shitting your pants or fire? Honestly I probably would of fired all of us would of, if you say you wouldn't you obviously haven't been in a situation like that then.

You're right it shouldn't of but even if it is ruled as a accident that wasn't the officers fault he will never be able to work at that PD again. Could you imaging going to work each day knowing you accidentally killed your brother in blue? Accidents happen i'm about 99% sure that this guy didn't shoot the cop on purpose. Do I think he should be punished and jailed? No I don't.

Well no but this what i think happened. I think the officer had a involuntary movement involving his finger because he got scared and he pulled the trigger and killed his fellow officer. No he shouldn't be put in jail like you said it was an accident. If it was a weapon malfunction the officers are also trained to maintain their weapons so that doesn't happen and i am not saying its not possible but in any event it is still tragic and i do feel for the fallen officer's family.

Weapon malfunctions can happen at any time, even if you take care of it, you may be trained for it, but you cannot stop it.

Meh, all my knowledge and training with firearms tells me that AD's are extremely uncommon.

Almost all cases of "misfires" are negligent discharges.

My bet with the BART cops is that during the search one guy spooked the other and accidentally got shot.
