RCMP hat protocol

Featured Replies

I was wondering if any RCMP enthusiasts or officers if there are any on the forums, what the hat protocol is for the Mounties. I have seen some pictures of Mounties wearing their regular police uniform along with their Stetson/Campaign hat. I even saw two Surrey Mounties walking down the White Rock Promenade on a summer afternoon wearing their Campaign hat just making a presence, and it looked GREAT! I never saw the two combined like that before and I loved the look, so how come if it looks so good, it is so rare? Is it all up to the officers? Or is there a certain time when it is aloud to be worn? All the pictures I have found are of Surrey Mounties so is it up to the detachment? I wish the Mounties wore it way more often.

I am pretty sure they are normally only allowed to wear them during special events or whenever the detachment commander allows the use of them with normal patrol wear. I wouldn't say it's up to the members themselves though.

You could always give the local detachments administrative line a call and ask, no harm in doing so. (I'm sure they have had stranger calls than someone inquiring about the hat protocol).

My cousin in-law is in the Surrey RCMP so I'll just ask him when he's off his leave. I might give Coquitlam RCMP a call tomorrow too. And yes I am sure they've had weirder calls haha

It usually depends on the Watch Commander. Some are very strict when it comes to dress protocol, while others are a lot more lenient.

I know in the Richmond RCMP, a lot of members wear the Stetson during the summer to help protect themselves from the sun.

Recently went on a ridealong with a nearby Detachment, the member I rode with had his on for about 5 hours (only out of the PC). He told me that it's much lighter during the summer, more comfortable. It doesn't matter about the Watch Commander or Supervisor, it's member preference, at least from what I was told.

I very SELDOM ever see a Mountie wear a hat in Cole Harbour, unless blocking a road off , that's pretty much the it of it.
