Ok, I'll start from the beginning.

After watching hours of the youtube videos I wanted to play for myself. I messed around on here and ended up downloading the 0.91 version before even buying the game. I went out and bought the game, came home and installed it and immediatly, re-downloaded the 0.91 without even trying GTA IV. I went through the installation process and it said it was successful.

But when I went to actually play gta it opened a black box (almost like a run: box) and said that there was a problem and windows would close it. After trying countless times I did some research and downloaded the newest patch (1.0.7 or whatever lol) hoping that would work.

Hoping I solved the problem I tried to open the game, and when i do it promps me to sign into the SocialClub (even though i just un-installed it during the patch process) and click Play, my icon turns into a spinning disk, my computer makes the noise like it's loading the disk....but nothing happens. huggghhh

After trying and trying I do a little more research and decide to download Windows Live for Games after reading that it worked for someone else, but NOW when i try to open the game it does the SocialClub stuff and when i click play it gives me this dang message...Exception EFCreateErrorin module DSOUND.dll at 000116C5. Cannot create file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV \asilog.txt". Access is denied.

And now i am stuck. I have tried to run the diagnostics but it gets halfway through it and brings up that thing again where it say Windows has to close it due to a problem or whatever. So I'm hoping someone can help me. Thanks for any help

Run the game as an administrator. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\ then select LaunchGTAIV, right click, and under compatibility select always run as administrator. You should also make a link to this .exe on your desktop for ease of use.

EDIT: Oh, also go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\ and select the Grand Theft Auto IV folder, right click, and make sure it is NOT read only.

Ok. Tried the first thing you said and ran it as administrator. Gave me this message...Error: SecuLauncher: Failed to start application. [2000].

Tried your edit and it WAS read only. I changed it and it automatically changed attributes for all folders and now i am going to give it a shot.

Thanks for your quick response btw.

You really should probably 'play' the game at least once (as in start it up, do the first mission, save, exit), before installing any mods, just to make sure the game generates any necessary files as needed. Some games kinda have certain files that don't get created until first launch, not sure if GTA IV is one, but I'd suggest trying anyways.
