I might be considering buying a 3d model (for personal use).

 

Now i am wondering how i can lower the polygon count (the model has 500000 polygons)

 

How can i lower the polygon count? (if i need to),

He means with a car with so many polys it would take hours, maybe days to lower it to the amount that is used by GTA

I don't have a problem with that. I'm willing to do it :)

Unless you have experience, and I mean quite a bit of it, with programs like 3ds Max or Cinema you are wasting your time and money, because I guarantee that you will break the model in the process of lowering the Polys, listen to the others and leave your fingers off that.

 

But in case you still want to try, you import the model in the 3d Design Program of your choice ( or the program that can actually open your native file format, but you figure that one out) and start simplifying the topology while keeping the level of detail at a reasonable level. if you are lucky the car has different LOD's and you can use that to your advantage.
