Getting Started

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, I'm new to all of this but I would like to join and play along. I haven't ever done anything like this before so I need to know how to get started. I don't even have the game on my PC. So exactly what game do I need to go buy? Thanks

Okay, going from a totally clean system.

Ready? Good, here goes!

Get a Steam account, since IV/DLC needs Steam either way.

But whatever you do, don't buy the boxed copy. Instead, go to Steam and price up the complete GTAIV set (which is IV, TLAD, TBOGT). So let's say it's $50 US. Look around online, shop around for a cheaper copy. There's sites that sell it for $20 or $25 US, half the price of what Steam retails at. The best bit? You get a Steam key either way.

Now go to Steam and either click install if you bought it through Steam, or activate the key you got, bottom left corner where it says + ADD A GAME...

Then, while it's downloading. Go and install the GFWL client (though it's a piece of...yeah). Go download LCPDFR 0.95RC2R2, which is in the download area here. Once IV is installed, or TBOGT (you can skip TLAD as far as FR goes), load up whichever you prefer and do the first mission, then save the game and quit (or keep playing, your choice here but you do wanna play FR right? :) )

That will create a setting file.

Now, if you're on W7/8, go to where you downloaded LCPDFR, and right click. Run as admin, say yes to UAC, if you got the four green checkmarks, you're good to go, if not, make a note of what you need, and install the missing items then rerun the installer as admin again.

Okay, so you got to the choices, right?

dsound or xliveless?

Your choice, I personally prefer xliveless as I can run a 100% complete save and not have to worry about accidentally going into the storyline while playing FR, however dsound is the more stable version (but not by much).

Hardcore or no?

Your choice, depends if you want the blips on or off and to die when turned into Swiss cheese

Callouts?

Keep them on. You can turn them off later on.

So, that's done right? Good. Now fire up IV or BOGT. Load your save game. You should be in between missions.

Okay. Press the up arrow to bring out your character's phone. Scrll down to options, left mouse. Sleep mode. Left mouse until sleep mode is turned on.

Now right mouse till you back out of the phone.

Next up. Hit Alt+P. That turns on LCPDFR.

Now head to a star icon on the map, enter the red checkpoint. That'll take you inside.

Hit E, take notes. Then go play

Okay, first off. Complete edition, it includes all three games.

Secondly, run the installer as admin. Right click, run as admin if you're on Vista/7/8 and if it asks you to confirm running it, select yes.

I downloaded the LCPDFR thing yesterday and saved it to my desktop.

Start game and play one mission and save and quit... Right?

Edited by OfficerPlunk

Right, that sets up the game as far as your PC settings go.

Once you've done that mission, saved and quit, run the LCPDFR installer as admin, and it should auto detect the Steam install directory since you ran the game once.

ok so now I downloaded the "Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City" and the "Grand Theft Auto IV" is still downloading. When I try to play the "Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City" it asks me to login social club and I do and nothing happens just stays on desktop after the social club thing goes away, do I have to wait till both games are downloaded or what?

I believe so. Once they are both done downloading and installing, try it again. If it still doesn't work. Try either making sure Grand Theft Auto IV is unblocked in your Windows Firewall. If it still doesn't load, make sure you have Games for Windows LIVE installed. Download Link for it: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=5549. Let me know if it works.

Please feel free to explain to me what is so wrong with the disc copy?

I've got the complete edition as a disc copy. I much prefer it over the steam version due to these reasons;

  • If I don't have an internet connection and want to re-install, I can. Steam can't.
  • If my internet is slow, I don't have to worry about re-downloading the game
  • If my account is suddenly hacked / closed, I don't lose the copy of the game.

I have a steam account, but I still do like the occasional disc copy of games

Processor: Intel i5-6600 @ 3.30GHz

GPU: MSI ARMOR GeForce GTX 1080 OC

Ram: 16GB Skylake

I agree 100% with you about the disc version. I have it myself but everyone has their own opinion.
