"Grand Theft Auto IV has stopped working" after the loading screen

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

I'm having a bit of trouble with GTA 4 right now. It was all working fine yesterday and I was enjoying LCPDFR but when I booted up my PC today, GTA won't start. It goes through the animations and then it says "Loading - Story Complete" and then it tells me that it has stopped working.

Here's a list of the mods that I have installed:

ELS V6

LCPDFR 0.95 RC2-R2

Automatic Number Plate Recognition

Traffic Flow

Like I said, all of these things were working perfectly yesterday. I've tried GTA with no mods, running as Admin, XP SP3 compatibility mode, XLiveless but none of these things work. What should I do? I've been putting off a fresh install of the game because it's a hassle but if that's my only option then I'll do it.

Here's my PC specs (yes, I know they're not brilliant but they're above the minimum requirements and it works) -

Intel Pentium D 930 3GHz Dual Core Processor

2.5GB of RAM

NVidia GeForce 7800 GTX 500mb

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

1TB Hard Drive

I'm new to LCPDFR and PC gaming in general so sorry if I've left out any vital information, just ask me if you need anything and I'll be more than happy to put it in!

Thanks,

Jaz!

If your running Traffic Flow Mod it usually messes up all the textures. I uninstalled that and just got the Real Traffic and my textures are fine. Try that.

Are you sure you haven't add anything since yesterday ? Like a cop car or something else ?

Can you paste here the report of the ?

I've got the same cars that I had yesterday. I think I got them from the LCPD pack and they were working fine too.

The diagnostic tool is telling me that no ASI loader was found. Not going to lie, I have no idea what that means!

I think I saved as normal Niko.

Asi loader : dsound or xlive. dsound is recommanded.

Have you xlive.dll or dsound.dll in the game folder ?

The screenshots says "2 errors", what is the second error ?

There's an 'xlive.dll' and a 'dsound.dll' in my game folder. The programs status is showing 2 errors but only one error is showing up on the list which is the ASI loader.

  • Author

Remove one of them (you should remove xlive).

I'll remove xlive and try again, thanks. Look at the screenshot, it's showing a blue tick next to "RAM not supported" - is that normal?

Right, I've removed xlive and this is what the diagnostic tool is saying now.

Edited by jazloc

Hmmmm, don't know what that means for the software, sorry. Mine says supported.

Maybe because you don't have a lot of RAM or it doesn't recognize something, I don't know ^^

But there is a blue "OK" tick so I assume that it's ok though...

Edit : I've just seen your edit.

Well, the weird thing is that you say you have 2.5Gb and diagnostic tool says 1.5Gb.

Can you go in control panel, system, and look how many RAM is detected ?

Edit2 : did you try to play after removing xlive ?

Windows is saying that I have 2.5GB of RAM but only 1.5GB usable - bad stick of RAM perhaps?

Just trying the game now.

Just tried the game without xlive.dll and the same thing has happened, gets to the loading screen, freezes and then tells me that it's stopped working.

Should I just uninstall and reinstall?

I bet money your on a 32 bit Windows 7... It Steals RAM for whatever reason. A fix to this is to get 64 bit, or more RAM.

EDIT: Also if i keeps crashing when loading appears the try removing the save file.

It's not normal to have 1Gb missing. Even if it's 32bits. Plus, 64bits is pretty useless if you have less than 4Gb.

It's a desktop PC ? Turn it off and pen it (touch a metallic exterior part before, for static electricity), and try to see if the RAM sticks are correctly put, and if they are ok.

You should hear a "click" when you put it correctly in the slot.

Edit : "open it", not "pen it", missing "o" ^^

Just found out that I had Windows set to only allow 1.5GB of RAM max, I've changed it to 2.5GB so I'll restart now and see if this has fixed my RAM problems.

X) why it was set on only 1.5Gb ? Do you remember doing that or was it always like that ?

That's the RAM working now, it's showing 2.5GB available and there's no errors in the diagnostic tool. I fitted an extra 1GB stick last week because 1.5GB wasn't enough and I forgot to change the limit in msconfig.

Update: Diagnostic tool is showing no errors so I think the problem lies within the savegame file. Does anyone have a savegame file that I can use? I don't want to start from scratch!

The game folder was marked as read only! Changed it now, will try again  :whistling:

aaaaand... it's working! Game loads up fine, starts and there's no issues! Thank you very much for your help DarthWound, or should I say, merci!

lol, I'm glad that it works, I hope that it will not crash after some minutes/hours.
