RIP NYPD Officer Edward Byrne

Recommended Posts

Today marks the twenty-fifth anniversary since NYPD Officer Edward Byrne was gunned down while guarding a witness' house.  It forced the city to take on the crack epidemic harder than they ever had before and brought a renewed consciousness into the public's eyes.  The full details can be seen on his Wikipedia page, and a retrospective on the crime and is repercussions can be viewed here. Thankfully, his killers were denied parole again last year.

RIP, for making the ultimate sacrifice.

He was from the 103rd Precinct in Queens.  I live relatively near; last time I visited to ask about the NYPD's hiring process they still had a large photo of him on the back wall.  A beautiful gesture, on top of the re-naming of the street in front of the 103rd Precinct to P.O. Edward Byrne Avenue.

Not to be cruel, but why did this particular cop get so famous after his death? Every 57 hours a cop dies, and you only hear about it on your local news. Once again, I am not trying to be a d*ck.

R.I.P.

If you would read his wiki page you would know now wouldn't you? Its because his death change the United States... I can see your point though everycop that dies should get there own wiki page (unless they did something bad like killed a bunch of other cops then killed him self...)

Also R.I.P Officer Edward...

Yeah I read it, but it didnt go in depth in why he became so "famous". He wasn't the only cop that was gunned down in his car while on duty ya know..

Officer Byrne's death was a turning point in the city of New York.  The crack epidemic had hit ridiculously hard, but it was generally only after his death when the city began to take things to new heights, stamping out the widespread crack trade for the most part in the coming years.  Not to mention he hadn't been on the force for all that long and he was basically assassinated - a notorious imprisoned drug lord at the time put an $8000 hit on any police officer of the NYPD; Byrne was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Here's more info on the specifics - http://www.nypdangels.com/cop/cop.php?id=71

Rather than go into precisely why he has this following attributed to him, just honor the man.

Its amazing how a police officer or anyone has to die before someone takes serious action.
