So I'm not sure where to post this. I'm brand new to this. I saw all these videos about these mods for a while now. So I went out and bought GTA 5 for pc and bought a computer. I have the basic lspd file installed and it works great. I'm looking for the best mods to download to get the most fun out of this game. I tried downloading some add ons like a new vehicle but I guess I did not do it right since it don't seem to work. Can anyone help me?

Because the default Game Config file is specifically tailored to support GTA V without any mods. Once you start adding things to the game, the engine can't handle them and the game will just crash. Therefore, you need a modified Game Config file in order to play with mods.

Ok thank you. I figured there would be a topic for noobies but I couldn't find one

Quick question though. Does every mod that people post on this site work with the lcpdfr program that is required to download first.

Also does that file go into for instance \Grand theft auto v\update

or does it go into a different directory?

For compatibility you should check the mod's description and readme.

For scripts and plugins, on this site we primarily have either RPH plugins or LSPDFR plugins/callouts. You can tell what kind of plugin it is from the download page next to "Script/Plugin Type".

  • LSPDFR Plugin or Callout means it requires LSPDFR and gets installed into "Grand Theft Auto V/plugins/LSPDFR". These are loaded automatically by LSPDFR.
  • Standalone plugin means you generally do not need LSPDFR to use it. These can come in different flavors.
    • On this site, most standalone plugins are RPH plugins. These are installed into "Grand Theft Auto V/plugins" and need to be loaded by RPH.
    • There are also ScriptHookV or ScriptHookVDotNet scripts that get installed either in the main Grand Theft Auto V directory or in the Scripts folder.
    • You can tell which loader the script/plugin requires from the "Requires" field on the download page.

As always, be sure to read the description and readme to know what is required for each mod and how to install it.

For content mods (vehicles, peds, visual, etc) it generally does not matter what plugins or scripts you have installed. These add or replace models or data files in the game. There may be some editing that needs to be done for plugins to recognize added content (such as editing the LSPDFR data files to recognize a new police car you added to the game) but the core functionality should not be affected. Installation of these varies from mod to mod so be sure to read the description and readme. You should never edit the base game files, the game does not like that, instead you need to use the OpenIV mods folder (see https://gta5mod.net/tutorials/how-to-use-openiv-mods-folder-and-keep-your-original-gta-v-files-safe/) or LML (see https://www.lcpdfr.com/lml/index/).

The gameconfig.xml I linked can be installed in two ways - either automatically through LML or manually in the mods folder. Instructions for either way are included in the description.
