[Solved] Game Crashes When Launching

Featured Replies

As the title states, my game won't launch. I've tried running a completely fresh install of the game, with only LSPDFR installed: the game doesn't start. I tried updating RPH from the version included in LSPDFR (I believe it's either 1.73 or 1.74, if my memory serves me correctly) to 1.78. The attached log is from RPH 1.78. I checked the pinned thread, my issue wasn't there (my system language is English, not Turkish).

What occurs when launching
RPH starts, the Rockstar launcher opens, the game launches to a black screen. RPH moves to the bottom left corner, saying "Enjoy", as expected. The game sits at the black screen, stops responding, and eventually closes, at which point RPH opens a window saying the game crashed (~40 seconds from the game window opening to crash).

Crash Report Exception Code (copied here for convenience): 0xc0000005 (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION)

Attempted Fixes

  • Starting the game with the DirectX hook: after around 40 seconds of sitting at a black screen, the game starts. After driving to a police station, I'm unable to press E to enter. The prompt displays, I press E: nothing happens.
  • Starting the game in forced windowed mode: The game crashes, same as if I had started it without forced windowed mode.
  • Setting the plugin timeout to 60000 and changing Main.PreloadAllModels to false: still crashes.
  • Updating my .NET framework: Windows won't let me install it as it says it's already installed, so we're good there.
  • Running the game as an administrator: No difference.
  • Both forced windowed and with RAGE set to load no plugins at startup: I was able to get the game to launch once, and it ran completely fine. However, attempting to launch a second time results in the same crash.

Attached File Explanation

  • Crash Report.txt  : The entire crash report, generated by RPH after the crash. This was generated with a timeout of 10000, Main.PreloadAllModels = false, and DirectX Hook Disabled unchecked.
  • RagePluginHook.log  : The RagePluginHook.log file that was generated during the same execution as the above report/file.
  • DirectX Hook Disabled RPH Log.log  : This was generated after setting the DirectX Hook to be disabled, launching the game, and attempting to enter a police station.

I've tried various fixes found on these forums I found via searching, none of them have worked. Hopefully the detail I've included can help pinpoint the issue.

Solved. See last post for fix details.

Go into the Rage Settings -> Game Settings -> Command Line Switches.
Look for "Force Windowed mode" and "Force DirectX11 / Force DirectX10". Check it. (Make sure commandline.txt in your GTA V folder is empty.)

Then, reinstall DirectX & restart your Computer after.
If you use some kind of visual mod, delete it.

Also, remove your GPU driver (nVidia or Radeon) and do a clean reinstall. That usually works.

Just performed those steps: still crashing. As stated in my original post, it's a clean GTA V install with nothing but LSPDFR, so no visual mods either.
I've attached both the crash report and log file, just in case there's a difference, but I haven't seen one.

Edit: The crash report contains the log text, but also contains a lot more information that could be useful. I'd recommend looking at it instead of RagePluginHook.log, in case you aren't already.

Edit 2: Just to add, I tested on every individual DirectX setting: 11, 10.1, and 10. Those logs are from 11, if I remember correctly.

If hardware is important, these are my specs:

  • Intel i9-9900k overclocked to 5GHz
  • RTX 2070
  • 32GB DDR4 3600MHz C18 RAM

Edit 3: Also, I don't have a mods folder present in my GTA V directory, since it's a clean install. Just thought I'd add that in case someone brings it up.

Fixed!

Even though I have the game through Steam, following the instructions for running on the Epic Games Store (running the game through Steam, then launching RAGE once I loaded in) solved the issue. Once I knew I had the game working, I went ahead and added my plugins one by one. For ELS, I ended up having to use an asi loader that goes through RAGE in order to get the keybinds working.
