Lessons from the virtual world, for the real world, in LSPDFR 0.4.9
We're back with another update for LSPDFR 0.4 which introduces a small handful of new features, as well as a couple of changes to the way in which the core pursuit system within the mod works.

Before we get to that though, the key headline of LSPDFR 0.4.9 - and something that we're really excited about - is that we've partnered with researchers at two major North American research universities: Brigham Young University (BYU) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) to explore the real-world research potential of LSPDFR, and the role that it could play in helping to understand how people react and behave in a law enforcement environment.

I know this might sound like a big change from the sort of updates that most of you who follow our work will be familiar with - and it certainly is in many aspects, but this doesn’t represent a fundamental change to LSPDFR itself, nor does it imply any significant changes to the way in which players will approach or interact with the mod.  Instead, we've created an opt-in system, similar to the statistics features already integrated into the mod with LSPDFR Sync, where with merely an enhanced level of in-game stats tracking, you'll be able to contribute towards our research with two top institutions by simply playing the mod.

To this end, we've added a new, simple call to LSPDFR that is used to support the survey data by following a more predictable pattern as compared to our traditional callouts within the mod.  Note that nothing changes in this regard if you choose not to take part in the study, and you can still play the new call as normal.

The new 'Arrest Warrant' call in LSPDFR 0.4.9 has you query the Police Computer and respond to a suspect's residence.

By gathering together these statistics with the player’s response to a couple of in-game scenarios, we’re hopeful that we can use this data to better understand how players, and by extension, law enforcement might react in certain situations in the real world.

There's more information about our research study over at https://research.lcpdfr.com/ where you can also opt in to take part.  I should note that as a thank you for helping with this, the universities have given us a couple of $50 Amazon gift cards that anyone who participates in the study will be entered into a lottery to win.

Changes to pursuits, a new apartment and more interaction.

Back on the topic of the other stuff in LSPDFR 0.4.9, though, one of the biggest changes that you'll notice affects the NPC police response to pursuits, bringing a new sense of variety to the way in which situations can be handled by responding officers.  Instead of all pursuits within LSPDFR being treated exactly the same, we've split up the system into two modes: Investigation and Chase.

A new 'confrontation' during an investigation, conducted entirely by NPC officers.

In the Investigation state, we no longer consider a Pursuit to be an actual chase - if that makes sense.  Instead, there's a little room for diversity in the actions of the officers and the suspects, rather than just someone running and the officers following.  So, in our initial implantation of this we've created a new response scenario where the responding officers will approach a suspect at a walking pace, usually with a hand on their holster.  They'll point at the suspect, call out for them to stop, and the system then takes over from there depending on the suspect's response, with the potential the suspect to either resist and escalate the Pursuit into the Chase state (which is what we're all currently familiar with), or for them to surrender peacefully and be arrested without any theatrics.

Moving on from this change, there's a couple of new features that've snuck their way in to LSPDFR 0.4.9 as well, including a new Downtown Los Santos apartment that not only boasts an absolutely killer city view, but is also conveniently opposite the FIB and IAA buildings - perfect for those of you that like your LSPDFR with a side of paperwork and federal bureaucracy.

You can also now seamlessly sit down on most chairs and benches throughout the game world with the tap of a button.

Pizzahut reacted to Cyan in Starting 2021 with some minor website changes
My last website update has been a while, so I thought it was worth adding a few notes on some new features that are live now, and some which have been soft-launched in the past month or so you may have missed.
We've also just made live a few tweaks to the site search that we've been working on and I thought it was worth sharing with you all.

Excluding comments and reviews from search results
The default behavior for our site search is to include both comments and reviews as part of the search. This isn't too useful when searching for files and reviews because, for example, if you search 'British', you'll end up with results where somebody would ask for a British-version of the pack in the comments.
So starting from today, we no longer include comments and reviews when you search for files. This functionality has been deployed to all of the site search, so you can optionally use it for other content too, for example gallery images. You can also choose to revert to the old behavior for file searches by changing the exclusion options.
You can see an example of this in action and how it can be useful with a British-themed search here.

    Wildcard searches
Our site search now properly supports wildcard searching. This functionality is not too useful for most content, but is useful for example in searching for phrases which are not separated by spaces.
You can see an example of this in action and how it can be useful in searching our Native Database here.

    Featured and Trending pages
We now default to only showing one game in our featured and trending list -- mixing GTA V, GTA IV and Resources content didn't make much sense here! The game will be GTA V by default, but you can configure this by changing your default game on the main downloads page. You can also use the filters on the page itself to check out other categories.

    Misc Downloads Changes
When uploading a file, you can sometimes lose track of the tab and end up closing it by accident. You'll now get a confirmation when closing the tab or window to make sure you don't waste time uploading content to LCPDFR.com. We have acknowledged some speed issues when uploading and hope to have a fix ready later soon. File comments are now sortable by the newest comment. Depending on user feedback, we may make this the default behavior in the future. The file field (used in 'Optimized for') no longer performs terribly and now actually works. Fix some validation issues with LML install.xml contributions. Fix some issues with the table on downloads category pages. Fix an issue where file types didn't show in 'Inside the File'.
    And later this year..
My focus recently has been to improve a lot of less user-visible features on the website that need a bit more love. For example, I've been putting a particular focus into our moderation tools and our search. Our moderation tools have not scaled to the current size of the community so this is a priority for us to streamline. I'm especially interested on improving our file approval process with a friendlier file approval flow that will be easier for users to see what's going on and easier for our moderators to work with. Hopefully we'll roll this out next month.
We are also working on re-working our file security scan and file upload process to prepare for an eventual move for files to an Amazon S3 compliant storage service.
Concerning further work on the site search, the improvement plan is for file search results to look and feel similar to how exploring files in their categories works now, including the ability to filter based on author-provided data just like the category view.
We're also hoping to feed our trending data and downloads data into the search to help provide more relevant suggestions.

I hope everyone is safe and well and that this year hopefully is a lot better than the last.
    Cyan

That 2011-2015 theme was iconic, and as much as I have tons of nostalgia for that theme and IPB 3.0, it definitely looks very outdated now.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the previous 2015-2020 IPB 4.0 theme we used, this new version is a huge improvement. Excellent work @Cyanand other Management.

Since early this year, we've been working on a project to drastically overhaul and improve our website and community by upgrading it to the latest version of the community software that we use, as well as building an all new look and feel and developing enhanced functionality and features.  Despite serving us well over the years, our website had become a little dated and disorganized, and bringing about profound changes is something we've wanted to do for a while.

Today, we're pleased to welcome you to the new LCPDFR.com, the culmination of our work on this project, which not only features a ton of improvements, enhancements and changes across the board in Invision Community 4.5, but also introduces a brand new, custom-built by us theme.

Our new theme, LSPDFR Retina and its sister theme, LSPDFR Dark (Beta), are fresh, content-centric looks fit for a modern website in 2020.  We've worked hard to prioritize content across the board with a far greater emphasis on images and our members.  Aside from this, our new theme features a far brighter user interface with better contrast and more saturation than before which blends in to a simpler overall style.

Please note that the darker variation of our theme is still in beta, is currently only available to registered members, and there are some elements and colors which are yet to be fully configured.

Additionally, there are a number of other changes to the way in which the community works.  @Cyan describes these in full in our LSPDFR on IPS 4.5 Changelog, but here's a summary of the most important changes:

    Ignore Lists & Blocking
A new opt-in system designed to give creators additional control over their content.  Our enhanced blocking system prevents ignored users from being able to comment on and review both gallery images and files.  This feature can be enabled in your Account Settings.

    Submission Ratings
Files uploaded by members are now automatically screened according to the member's standing within the community, with certain submissions now eligible for automatic approvals.  You can view your own rating in your Creator Settings.

    Disable Comments
It's now possible for creators to disable comments when they first upload a new file.  Please do note that files with comments turned off may not be featured as prominently throughout the community.

    LSPDFR Character Cover Photos
You can now add a cover photo to the profile pages of your LSPDFR Characters, check out an example by @LMS here: https://www.lcpdfr.com/lspdfrsync/character/140-kim-orange/

We think that our new website is a giant leap forward for us, and very much hope that you'll enjoy the new LCPDFR.com as much as we have making and designing it for you.

Of course, we're very open to feedback regarding both the new features on the website and our new design, and welcome you to share your thoughts or comments with us below.

Thanks for reading, and welcome to the new LCPDFR.com!
    Sam.

I will point out that Bejo uses ads on his site, so that might have been what you were experiencing. It can be a hassle to use, but you can always join his Discord and calmly and civilly let him know about it and I am sure he would be more than happy to come up with alternatives that are both user friendly and a way for him to earn a bit of extra income. Something we should all remember is that he only gets donations and doesnt get paid a salary for this. 🙂

20 June, 2019 - We have released a minor update (Build 7110) for LSPDFR 0.4.2 to fix a couple of issues that have been reported to us.

We're happy to announce that the latest update of LSPDFR, version 0.4.2, is now available.  LSPDFR 0.4.2 brings with it a couple of snazzy new features including protective ballistic shields and the ability to flash your police badge.  Aside from this, 0.4.2 not only fixes a number of bugs that have been reported, but also introduces sweeping changes and improvements to the LSPDFR 0.4 API, giving plugin developers more access and power than ever.

Additionally, we've made a massive improvement to the Pause Menu which, in something of a first for a GTA mod, now lets you seamlessly configure your LSPDFR keybinds in-game, using the same system as the game itself.

Pizzahut reacted to Sam in LSPDFR 0.4.2 - Coming Soon!
Hot off the release of LSPDFR 0.4 a couple of months ago, we're upping the ante with another update which brings not only sweeping improvements to the LSPDFR 0.4 API, but also some unique features which have long been requested.

Originally, the plan was merely to release 0.4.2 as a quick follow-up to 0.4 and 0.4.1 - just simple fixes and changes, plus the API improvements to help developers make the most of 0.4.  Necessary changes, but not really cool enough, right?  So, with that in mind we took a little time to dig back into the archives of LSPDFR and revisit some of our old concepts and ideas.  Now, while some of these are actually in the mod - they're most likely either tucked away as 'easter eggs' or just disabled because they weren't quite right.

If you're a connoisseur of traffic stops, for example, you might've noticed that occasionally the unexpected and oh so demoralizing experience of pulling over a federal agent hits you right in the feels as they arrogantly flash their shiny badge, tell you where to stick your comparatively less shiny badge, and drive off.  (If you haven't seen this before, here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNOxZR2ak0M)

Originally the plan was to add this as a feature for players to use, but it just didn't quite fit in with 0.3, and we had some trouble with the animation not being quite as fluid as we'd like.  That was then, though, and given that you now play as your own character both on and off duty, we thought it'd be a bit of a must-have now, so we've tidied it up and are introducing it as a player action in 0.4.2.

With one quick glance at the shimmering shield, her problems are suddenly your problems.  (Note, a custom badge model is shown instead of the default FIB one - you will be able to define custom models to use on a per-agency basis)

Now, not only does this look exceedingly awesome, but it serves a practical purpose too.  Available both on and off-duty, showing your badge will clear any wanted level and may also instill the fear of the law in nearby citizens, potentially de-escalating the otherwise unavoidable confrontations that flare when you walk around Mirror Park without the latest iFruit phone, for example!

Of course, that's not all.  Continuing with the idea of adding things that are just generally cool, we know that people have wanted a ballistic shield feature in LSPDFR for quite some time.  Sure, you can spawn one with a trainer or download another mod, but it's just not quite the same is it?

We thought it'd be particularly sweet to have it at your fingertips instead, fully integrated with LSPDFR, ready to kick some butt.

As if being Frank Tenpenny isn't cool enough...

Our ballistic shield, accessed from the Interaction Menu, uses our new animation system in 0.4.2 which we think looks absolutely gorgeous.  There's also the freedom to switch between Stealth and Action mode which will vary your pose accordingly, compatibility with most weapons and the potential for future AI support.

Oh yeah, did we mention you can actually arrest people at gunpoint while holding a freaking shield?!

Keep your eyes open for LSPDFR 0.4.2, coming soon.
