Let's say you're on the highway with overdrive off and you're cruising at normal highway speeds. Then you turn overdrive on. I believe what it means, an extra gear is added or something to allow for smoother cruising. If you were cruising at a higher RPM on the highway without overdrive, your motor will sound louder with the higher RPM. Turn overdrive on and the RPMs will lessen and the engine will be working a lot less and a lot more efficiently. It basically lengthens the gears if you could say to allow for longer gear movements.

Ah, Cool.

If your car's a V-8 like mine, it might be best to always drive in overdrive unless you're in slow traffic or crowded city streets. If you're driving a smaller V-6 or something of the liking, only use overdrive on the highway since your engine works "less".
