The MTA RTS bus on this picture is from 1988 and for the record, that particular model was introduced in the late 1970's. On the other hand, the livery, is indeed modern.

Those RTS buses were quite popular, as Strike stated.  Their original run for the MTA was produced by General Motors and branded as a GMC.  The design was later sold off to TMC, a company in New Mexico.  TMC made all of the RTS-06 buses still operating in the MTA's fleet today. 

Here are a few images taken in the early 80s.  Maybe they'll shed more light on the livery - note the older MTA logo in particular.
