My dad had our computer guy build a new computer for gaming, tell me if this is fast enough.

A GTS 450 isn't really the best card for gaming with. It isn't even in the GTX series. Using hwcompare it wouldn't be a surprise to have it run at half the processing power of a GTX 560 Ti, which some claim to be the minimum for GTA (especially if using graphics mods). However, it is no secret that GTA is poorly coded for the PC and other games will run decent on that card.

The processor only has 2MB of L2 cache, which may bog it down a little. Most gaming-grade CPUs come with 4-8MB of L2 or L3 cache (i7-870 has 8MB). However, being a quad core processor and not a dual or single core, the effect won't be as noticeable. At 45W the CPU is also light on power draw, which usually means it isn't as fast as, say, a 90W CPU. It also only runs at 2.4GHz out of the box. However, it should be a cool-running CPU.

I wouldn't expect to get high framerates in GTA at all, but it would be playable. I would definitely avoid graphics mods like ENB.

I have a GTS 450 and it performs very well. Iconography is right though. I would stay clear of high poly car packs and graphic mods to avoid texture loss.

However, I play GTA IV on the highest settings and so far, it has run other system hogs like Arma Combined ops and Napoleon Total war without issues.

Kjel, what do you have for a CPU? CPU speed seems to determine how GTA IV performs, a lot of the time. Based on the specs alone (I've never seen one in use) I wouldn't expect a GTS 450 to run GTA on high, but I'd like to know if you have a high end CPU paired with it, since that would certainly help things (mostly just curious about this).

I have an Intel Core2 Duo E6600 (4Mb Cache, 2.40 Ghz, 1066 MHz FSB). However, it's overclocked to 3.0 GHz. Again, it isn't top notch but it delivers great performance, especially when overclocked. See Neoseeker's review: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/core2duo_e6600/12.html

"Well, for one thing, that the E6600 is a great overclocker, with unbelievable performance when overclocked, and ‘merely’ outstanding performance at stock speeds. Which means that whether you're an enthusiast, gamer, or just some person who wants oustanding performance the Core 2 Duo delivers once again... For Gamers: Core 2 Duo is a great choice."

I am thinking of upgrading my specs though since it's been more than a year since I built it.

not bad should be ok but u would need better to play at max. But i would have built something much better than that an i5 at least 8 gb ram at least ect ect that way u can play gta 5 and on...
